ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥

Par gʰar cheeṫ manmukʰ dolaa▫é.

The self-willed Manmukh is lured by another man’s wife.

ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥

Gal jévree ḋʰanḋʰæ laptaa▫é.

The noose is around his neck, and he is entangled in petty conflicts.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥

Gurmukʰ chʰootas har guṇ gaa▫é. ||5||

The Gurmukh is emancipated, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||

ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥

Ji▫o ṫan biḋʰvaa par ka▫o ḋé▫ee.

The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger;

ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥

Kaam ḋaam chiṫ par vas sé▫ee.

she allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money,

ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥

Bin pir ṫaripaṫ na kabahooⁿ ho▫ee. ||6||

but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6||

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥

Paṛ paṛ poṫʰee simriṫ paatʰaa.

You may read, recite and study the scriptures, the Smritis,

ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥

Béḋ puraaṇ paṛæ suṇ ṫʰaataa.

and read Vedas and Puranas until tired;

ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥

Bin ras raaṫé man baho naataa. ||7||

but without being imbued with the Lord’s essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7||

ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥

Ji▫o chaaṫrik jal parém pi▫aasaa.

As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain,

ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥

Ji▫o meenaa jal maahi ulaasaa.

and as the fish delights in the water,

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥

Naanak har ras pee ṫaripṫaasaa. ||8||11||

Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1.

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

Hatʰ kar maræ na lékʰæ paavæ.

One who dies in stubbornness shall not be approved,

ਵੇਸ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥

vés karæ baho bʰasam lagaavæ.

even though he may wear religious robes and smear his body all over with ashes.

ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

Naam bisaar bahur pachʰuṫaavæ. ||1||

Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he comes to regret and repent in the end. ||1||

ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਸੂਖ ॥

Ṫooⁿ man har jee▫o ṫooⁿ man sookʰ.

Believe in the Dear Lord, and you shall find peace of mind.

ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਸਹਹਿ ਜਮ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Naam bisaar sahėh jam ḋookʰ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

Forgetting the Naam, you shall have to endure the pain of death. ||1||Pause||

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਅਗਰ ਕਪੂਰਿ ॥

Cho▫aa chanḋan agar kapoor.

The smell of musk, sandalwood and camphor,

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

Maa▫i▫aa magan param paḋ ḋoor.

and the intoxication of Maya, takes one far away from the state of supreme dignity.

ਨਾਮਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂਰਿ ॥੨॥

Naam bisaari▫æ sabʰ kooṛo koor. ||2||

Forgetting the Naam, one becomes the most false of all the false. ||2||

ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥

Néjé vaajé ṫakʰaṫ salaam.

Lances and swords, marching bands, thrones and the salutes of others

ਅਧਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਮੁ ॥

Aḋʰkee ṫarisnaa vi▫aapæ kaam.

only increase his desire; he is engrossed in sexual desire.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਚੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੩॥

Bin har jaaché bʰagaṫ na naam. ||3||

Without seeking the Lord, neither devotional worship nor the Naam are obtained. ||3||

ਵਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਾ ॥

vaaḋ ahaⁿkaar naahee parabʰ mélaa.

Union with God is not obtained by arguments and egotism.

ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥

Man ḋé paavahi naam suhélaa.

But by offering your mind, the comfort of the Naam is obtained.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੪॥

Ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é agi▫aan ḋuhélaa. ||4||

In the love of duality and ignorance, you shall suffer. ||4||

ਬਿਨੁ ਦਮ ਕੇ ਸਉਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਟ ॥

Bin ḋam ké sa▫uḋaa nahee haat.

Without money, you cannot buy anything in the store.

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹੀ ਵਾਟ ॥

Bin bohiṫʰ saagar nahee vaat.

Without a boat, you cannot cross over the ocean.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਟਿ ॥੫॥

Bin gur sévé gʰaaté gʰaat. ||5||

Without serving the Guru, everything is lost. ||5||

ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਵਾਟ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥

Ṫis ka▫o vaahu vaahu jė vaat ḋikʰaavæ.

‘Waaho! Waaho!’ - Hail, hail, to the one who shows us the Way.

ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥

Ṫis ka▫o vaahu vaahu jė sabaḋ suṇaavæ.

‘Waaho! Waaho!’ - Hail, hail, to the one who teaches the Word of the Shabad.

ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੬॥

Ṫis ka▫o vaahu vaahu jė mél milaavæ. ||6||

‘Waaho! Waaho!’ - Hail, hail, to the one who unites me in the Lord’s Union. ||6||

ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

vaahu vaahu ṫis ka▫o jis kaa ih jee▫o.

‘Waaho! Waaho!’ - Hail, hail, to the one who is the Keeper of this soul.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਉ ॥

Gur sabḋee maṫʰ amriṫ pee▫o.

Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, contemplate this Ambrosial Nectar.

ਨਾਮ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੀਉ ॥੭॥

Naam vadaa▫ee ṫuḋʰ bʰaaṇæ ḋee▫o. ||7||

The Glorious Greatness of the Naam is bestowed according to the Pleasure of Your Will. ||7||

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਮਾਇ ॥

Naam binaa ki▫o jeevaa maa▫é.

Without the Naam, how can I live, O mother?

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਤੁ ਰਹਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥

An▫ḋin japaṫ raha▫o ṫéree sarṇaa▫é.

Night and day, I chant it; I remain in the Protection of Your Sanctuary.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੨॥

Naanak naam raṫé paṫ paa▫é. ||8||12||

O Nanak! Attuned to the Naam, honor is attained. ||8||12||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1.

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਭੇਖੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥

Ha▫umæ karaṫ bʰékʰee nahee jaani▫aa.

Acting in egotism, the Lord is not known, even by wearing religious robes.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥

Gurmukʰ bʰagaṫ virlé man maani▫aa. ||1||

How rare is that Gurmukh, who surrenders his mind in devotional worship. ||1||

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

Ha▫o ha▫o karaṫ nahee sach paa▫ee▫æ.

By actions done in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the True Lord is not obtained.

ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ha▫umæ jaa▫é param paḋ paa▫ee▫æ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

But when egotism departs, then the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||1||Pause||

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥

Ha▫umæ kar raajé baho ḋʰaavėh.

The kings act in egotism, and undertake all sorts of expeditions.

ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥

Ha▫umæ kʰapėh janam mar aavahi. ||2||

But through their egotism, they are ruined; they die, only to be reborn over and over again. ||2||

ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥

Ha▫umæ nivræ gur sabaḋ veechaaræ.

Egotism is overcome only by contemplating the Word of the Guru’s Shabad.

ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥੩॥

Chanchal maṫ ṫi▫aagæ panch sangʰaaræ. ||3||

One who restrains his fickle mind subdues the five passions. ||3||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥

Anṫar saach sahj gʰar aavahi.

With the True Lord deep within the self, the Celestial Mansion is intuitively found.

ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥

Raajan jaaṇ param gaṫ paavahi. ||4||

Understanding the Sovereign Lord, the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||4||

ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥

Sach karṇee gur bʰaram chukʰaavæ.

The Guru dispels the doubts of those whose actions are true.

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੫॥

Nirbʰa▫o kæ gʰar ṫaaṛee laavæ. ||5||

They focus their attention on the Home of the Fearless Lord. ||5||

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

Ha▫o ha▫o kar marṇaa ki▫aa paavæ.

Those who act in egotism, selfishness and conceit die; what do they gain?

ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੬॥

Pooraa gur bʰété so jʰagar chukʰaavæ. ||6||

Those who meet the Perfect Guru are rid of all conflicts. ||6||

ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

Jéṫee hæ ṫéṫee kihu naahee.

Whatever exists, is in reality nothing.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਭੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੀ ॥੭॥

Gurmukʰ gi▫aan bʰét guṇ gaahee. ||7||

Obtaining spiritual wisdom from the Guru, I sing the Glories of God. ||7||
