ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥

Ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é ḋæṫ sangʰaaré.

Because of the love of duality, God killed the demons.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥

Gurmukʰ saach bʰagaṫ nisṫaaré. ||8||

By their true devotion, the Gurmukhs have been saved. ||8||

ਬੂਡਾ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥

Boodaa ḋurjoḋʰan paṫ kʰo▫ee.

Sinking down, Durodhan lost his honor.

ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥

Raam na jaani▫aa karṫaa so▫ee.

He did not know the Creator Lord.

ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੂਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੯॥

Jan ka▫o ḋookʰ pachæ ḋukʰ ho▫ee. ||9||

One who makes the Lord’s humble servant suffer, shall himself suffer and rot. ||9||

ਜਨਮੇਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥

Janméjæ gur sabaḋ na jaani▫aa.

Janameja did not know the Word of the Guru’s Shabad.

ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥

Ki▫o sukʰ paavæ bʰaram bʰulaani▫aa.

Deluded by doubt, how could he find peace?

ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥੧੦॥

Ik ṫil bʰoolé bahur pachʰuṫaani▫aa. ||10||

Making a mistake, for even an instant, you shall regret and repent later on. ||10||

ਕੰਸੁ ਕੇਸੁ ਚਾਂਡੂਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

Kans kés chaaⁿdoor na ko▫ee.

Kansa the King and his warriors Kays and Chandoor had no equals.

ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥

Raam na cheeni▫aa apnee paṫ kʰo▫ee.

But they did not remember the Lord, and they lost their honor.

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧੧॥

Bin jagḋees na raakʰæ ko▫ee. ||11||

Without the Lord of the Universe, no one can be saved. ||11||

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

Bin gur garab na méti▫aa jaa▫é.

Without the Guru, pride cannot be eradicated.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

Gurmaṫ ḋʰaram ḋʰeeraj har naa▫é.

Following the Guru’s Teachings, one obtains Dharmic faith, composure and the Lord’s Name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੧੨॥੯॥

Naanak naam milæ guṇ gaa▫é. ||12||9||

O Nanak! Singing the Glories of God, His Name is received. ||12||9||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1.

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਅੰਕਿ ਚੜਾਵਉ ॥

Cho▫aa chanḋan ank chaṛaava▫o.

I may anoint my limbs with sandalwood oil.

ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਹਢਾਵਉ ॥

Paat patambar pahir hadʰaava▫o.

I may dress up and wear silk and satin clothes.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥

Bin har naam kahaa sukʰ paava▫o. ||1||

But without the Lord’s Name, where would I find peace? ||1||

ਕਿਆ ਪਹਿਰਉ ਕਿਆ ਓਢਿ ਦਿਖਾਵਉ ॥

Ki▫aa pahira▫o ki▫aa odʰ ḋikʰaava▫o.

So, what should I wear? In what clothes should I display myself?

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bin jagḋees kahaa sukʰ paava▫o. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

Without the Lord of the Universe, how can I find peace? ||1||Pause||

ਕਾਨੀ ਕੁੰਡਲ ਗਲਿ ਮੋਤੀਅਨ ਕੀ ਮਾਲਾ ॥

Kaanee kundal gal moṫee▫an kee maalaa.

I may wear earrings, and a pearl necklace around my neck;

ਲਾਲ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ਫੂਲ ਗੁਲਾਲਾ ॥

Laal nihaalee fool gulaalaa.

my bed may be adorned with red blankets, flowers and red powder;

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਲਾ ॥੨॥

Bin jagḋees kahaa sukʰ bʰaalaa. ||2||

but without the Lord of the Universe, where can I search for peace? ||2||

ਨੈਨ ਸਲੋਨੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

Næn salonee sunḋar naaree.

I may have a beautiful woman with fascinating eyes;

ਖੋੜ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਕਰੈ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥

Kʰoṛ seegaar karæ aṫ pi▫aaree.

she may decorate herself with the sixteen adornments, and make herself appear gorgeous.

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਭਜੇ ਨਿਤ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੩॥

Bin jagḋees bʰajé niṫ kʰu▫aaree. ||3||

But without meditating on the Lord of the Universe, there is only continual suffering. ||3||

ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ॥

Ḋar gʰar mėhlaa séj sukʰaalee.

In his hearth and home, in his palace, upon his soft and comfortable bed,

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਫੂਲ ਬਿਛਾਵੈ ਮਾਲੀ ॥

Ahinis fool bichʰaavæ maalee.

day and night, the flower-girls scatter flower petals;

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੁ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖਾਲੀ ॥੪॥

Bin har naam so ḋéh ḋukʰaalee. ||4||

but without the Lord’s Name, the body is miserable. ||4||

ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ॥

Hævar gævar néjé vaajé.

Horses, elephants, lances, marching bands,

ਲਸਕਰ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਪਾਜੇ ॥

Laskar néb kʰavaasee paajé.

armies, standard bearers, royal attendants and ostentatious displays -

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਝੂਠੇ ਦਿਵਾਜੇ ॥੫॥

Bin jagḋees jʰootʰé ḋivaajé. ||5||

without the Lord of the Universe, these undertakings are all useless. ||5||

ਸਿਧੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਉ ॥

Siḋʰ kahaava▫o riḋʰ siḋʰ bulaava▫o.

He may be called a Siddha, a man of spiritual perfection, and he may summon riches and supernatural powers;

ਤਾਜ ਕੁਲਹ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਬਨਾਵਉ ॥

Ṫaaj kulah sir chʰaṫar banaava▫o.

he may place a crown upon his head, and carry a royal umbrella;

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੬॥

Bin jagḋees kahaa sach paava▫o. ||6||

but without the Lord of the Universe, where can Truth be found? ||6||

ਖਾਨੁ ਮਲੂਕੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਾਜਾ ॥

Kʰaan malook kahaava▫o raajaa.

He may be called an emperor, a lord, and a king;

ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੂੜੇ ਹੈ ਪਾਜਾ ॥

Abé ṫabé kooṛé hæ paajaa.

he may give orders - “Do this now, do this then” - but this is a false display.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਸਵਰਸਿ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੭॥

Bin gur sabaḋ na savras kaajaa. ||7||

Without the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, his works are not accomplished. ||7||

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥

Ha▫umæ mamṫaa gur sabaḋ visaaree.

Egotism and possessiveness are dispelled by the Word of the Guru’s Shabad.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥

Gurmaṫ jaani▫aa riḋæ muraaree.

With the Guru’s Teachings in my heart, I have come to know the Lord.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੧੦॥

Paraṇvaṫ Naanak saraṇ ṫumaaree. ||8||10||

Prays Nanak, I seek Your Sanctuary. ||8||10||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1.

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਸੇਵਾ ਏਕ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਅਵਰੇ ॥

Sévaa ék na jaanas avré.

Those who serve the One Lord, do not know any other.

ਪਰਪੰਚ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਕਵਰੇ ॥

Parpanch bi▫aaḋʰ ṫi▫aagæ kavré.

They abandon the bitter worldly conflicts.

ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥

Bʰaa▫é milæ sach saachæ sach ré. ||1||

Through love and truth, they meet the Truest of the True. ||1||

ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

Æsaa raam bʰagaṫ jan ho▫ee.

Such are the humble devotees of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har guṇ gaa▫é milæ mal ḋʰo▫ee. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and their pollution is washed away. ||1||Pause||

ਊਂਧੋ ਕਵਲੁ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥

Ooⁿḋʰo kaval sagal sansaaræ.

The heart-lotus of the entire universe is upside-down.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਰਜਾਰੈ ॥

Ḋurmaṫ agan jagaṫ parjaaræ.

The fire of evil-mindedness is burning up the world.

ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੨॥

So ubræ gur sabaḋ beechaaræ. ||2||

They alone are saved, who contemplate the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ||2||

ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਅਰੁ ਮੀਨਾ ॥

Bʰaring paṫang kunchar ar meenaa.

The bumble bee, the moth, the elephant, the fish

ਮਿਰਗੁ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਨਾ ॥

Mirag maræ sėh apunaa keenaa.

and the deer - all suffer for their actions, and die.

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨਾ ॥੩॥

Ṫarisnaa raach ṫaṫ nahee beenaa. ||3||

Trapped by desire, they cannot see reality. ||3||

ਕਾਮੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥

Kaam chiṫæ kaamaṇ hiṫkaaree.

The lover of women is obsessed with sex.

ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥

Kroḋʰ binaasæ sagal vikaaree.

All the wicked are ruined by their anger.

ਪਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥

Paṫ maṫ kʰovėh naam visaaree. ||4||

Honor and good sense are lost, when one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||
