ਵਰਨ ਭੇਖ ਨਹੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ॥

varan bʰékʰ nahee barahmaṇ kʰaṫree.

There were no castes or social classes, no religious robes, no Brahmin or Kshatriya.

ਦੇਉ ਨ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਗਊ ਗਾਇਤ੍ਰੀ ॥

Ḋé▫o na ḋéhuraa ga▫oo gaa▫iṫaree.

There were no demi-gods or temples, no cows or Gaayatri prayer.

ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਨਹੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਪੂਜਾ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥

Hom jag nahee ṫiraṫʰ naavaṇ naa ko poojaa laa▫iḋaa. ||10||

There were no burnt offerings, no ceremonial feasts, no cleansing rituals at sacred shrines of pilgrimage; no one worshiped in adoration. ||10||

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੁਲਾ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਾਜੀ ॥

Naa ko mulaa naa ko kaajee.

There was no Mullah, there was no Qazi.

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਸੇਖੁ ਮਸਾਇਕੁ ਹਾਜੀ ॥

Naa ko sékʰ masaa▫ik haajee.

There was no Shaykh, or pilgrims to Mecca.

ਰਈਅਤਿ ਰਾਉ ਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥

Ra▫ee▫aṫ raa▫o na ha▫umæ ḋunee▫aa naa ko kahaṇ kahaa▫iḋaa. ||11||

There was no king or subjects, and no worldly egotism; no one spoke of himself. ||11||

ਭਾਉ ਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ॥

Bʰaa▫o na bʰagṫee naa siv sakṫee.

There was no love or devotion, no Shiva or Shakti - no energy or matter.

ਸਾਜਨੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਕਤੀ ॥

Saajan meeṫ binḋ nahee rakṫee.

There were no friends or companions, no semen or blood.

ਆਪੇ ਸਾਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਏਹੋ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥

Aapé saahu aapé vaṇjaaraa saaché ého bʰaa▫iḋaa. ||12||

He Himself is the banker, and He Himself is the merchant. Such is the Pleasure of the Will of the True Lord. ||12||

ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਨ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ॥

Béḋ kaṫéb na simriṫ saasaṫ.

There were no Vedas, Korans or Bibles, no Smritis or Shastras.

ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਉਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਆਸਤ ॥

Paatʰ puraaṇ uḋæ nahee aasaṫ.

There was no recitation of the Puranas, no sunrise or sunset.

ਕਹਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥

Kahṫaa bakṫaa aap agochar aapé alakʰ lakʰaa▫iḋaa. ||13||

The Unfathomable Lord Himself was the speaker and the preacher; the unseen Lord Himself saw everything. ||13||

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥

Jaa ṫis bʰaaṇaa ṫaa jagaṫ upaa▫i▫aa.

When He so willed, He created the world.

ਬਾਝੁ ਕਲਾ ਆਡਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥

Baajʰ kalaa aadaaṇ rahaa▫i▫aa.

Without any supporting power, He sustained the universe.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਉਪਾਏ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥

Barahmaa bisan mahés upaa▫é maa▫i▫aa moh vaḋʰaa▫iḋaa. ||14||

He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; He fostered enticement and attachment to Maya. ||14||

ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥

virlé ka▫o gur sabaḋ suṇaa▫i▫aa.

How rare is that person who listens to the Word of the Guru’s Shabad.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥

Kar kar ḋékʰæ hukam sabaa▫i▫aa.

He created the creation, and watches over it; the Hukam of His Command is over all.

ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਅਰੰਭੇ ਗੁਪਤਹੁ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥

Kʰand barahmand paaṫaal arambʰé gupṫahu pargatee aa▫iḋaa. ||15||

He formed the planets, solar systems and nether regions, and brought what was hidden to manifestation. ||15||

ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

Ṫaa kaa anṫ na jaaṇæ ko▫ee.

No one knows His limits.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥

Pooré gur ṫé sojʰee ho▫ee.

This understanding comes from the Perfect Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੀ ਬਿਸਮ ਭਏ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੩॥੧੫॥

Naanak saach raṫé bismaaḋee bisam bʰa▫é guṇ gaa▫iḋaa. ||16||3||15||

O Nanak! Those who are attuned to the Truth are wonderstruck; singing His Glorious Praises, they are filled with wonder. ||16||3||15||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo mėhlaa 1.

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥

Aapé aap upaa▫é niraalaa.

He Himself created the creation, remaining unattached.

ਸਾਚਾ ਥਾਨੁ ਕੀਓ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

Saachaa ṫʰaan kee▫o ḋa▫i▫aalaa.

The Merciful Lord has established His True Home.

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਬੰਧਨੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਰਚਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥

Pa▫uṇ paaṇee agnee kaa banḋʰan kaa▫i▫aa kot rachaa▫iḋaa. ||1||

Binding together air, water and fire, He created the fortress of the body. ||1||

ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਣਹਾਰੈ ॥

Na▫o gʰar ṫʰaapé ṫʰaapaṇhaaræ.

The Creator established the nine gates.

ਦਸਵੈ ਵਾਸਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥

Ḋasvæ vaasaa alakʰ apaaræ.

In the Tenth Gate, is the dwelling of the infinite, unseen Lord.

ਸਾਇਰ ਸਪਤ ਭਰੇ ਜਲਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥

Saa▫ir sapaṫ bʰaré jal nirmal gurmukʰ mæl na laa▫iḋaa. ||2||

The seven seas are overflowing with the Ambrosial Water; the Gurmukhs are not stained with filth. ||2||

ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਦੀਪਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥

Rav sas ḋeepak joṫ sabaa▫ee.

The lamps of the sun and the moon fill all with light.

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

Aapé kar vékʰæ vadi▫aa▫ee.

Creating them, He beholds His own glorious greatness.

ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਚੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥

Joṫ saroop saḋaa sukʰ▫ḋaaṫa saché sobʰaa paa▫iḋaa. ||3||

The Giver of peace is forever the embodiment of Light; from the True Lord, glory is obtained. ||3||

ਗੜ ਮਹਿ ਹਾਟ ਪਟਣ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥

Gaṛ mėh haat pataṇ vaapaaraa.

Within the fortress are the stores and markets; the business is transacted there.

ਪੂਰੈ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋਲੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥

Pooræ ṫol ṫolæ vaṇjaaraa.

The Supreme Merchant weighs with the perfect weights.

ਆਪੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਵਿਸਾਹੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥

Aapé raṫan visaahé lévæ aapé keemaṫ paa▫iḋaa. ||4||

He Himself buys the jewel, and He Himself appraises its value. ||4||

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਪਾਵਣਹਾਰੈ ॥

Keemaṫ paa▫ee paavaṇhaaræ.

The Appraiser appraises its value.

ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ॥

véparvaah pooré bʰandaaræ.

The Independent Lord is overflowing with His treasures.

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਲੇ ਆਪੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥

Sarab kalaa lé aapé rahi▫aa gurmukʰ kisæ bujʰaa▫iḋaa. ||5||

He holds all powers, He is all-pervading; how few are those who, as Gurmukh, understand this. ||5||

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ॥

Naḋar karé pooraa gur bʰétæ.

When He bestows His Glance of Grace, one meets the Perfect Guru.

ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਰੈ ਫੇਟੈ ॥

Jam janḋaar na maaræ fétæ.

The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot strike him then.

ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਾਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਬਿਗਸਿ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੬॥

Ji▫o jal anṫar kamal bigaasee aapé bigas ḋʰi▫aa▫iḋaa. ||6||

He blossoms forth like the lotus flower in the water; he blossoms forth in joyful meditation. ||6||

ਆਪੇ ਵਰਖੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰਾ ॥

Aapé varkʰæ amriṫ ḋʰaaraa.

He Himself rains down the Ambrosial Stream of

ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

Raṫan javéhar laal apaaraa.

jewels, diamonds, and rubies of priceless value.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥

Saṫgur milæ ṫa pooraa paa▫ee▫æ parém paḋaaraṫʰ paa▫iḋaa. ||7||

When they meet the True Guru, then they find the Perfect Lord; they obtain the treasure of Love. ||7||

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਲਹੈ ਅਮੋਲੋ ॥

Parém paḋaaraṫʰ lahæ amolo.

Whoever receives the priceless treasure of Love -

ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਘਾਟਸਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੋ ॥

Kab hee na gʰaatas pooraa ṫolo.

his weight never decreases; he has perfect weight.

ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚੋ ਸਉਦਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥

Saché kaa vaapaaree hovæ sacho sa▫uḋaa paa▫iḋaa. ||8||

The trader of Truth becomes true, and obtains the merchandise. ||8||

ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥

Sachaa sa▫uḋaa virlaa ko paa▫é.

How rare are those who obtain the true merchandise.

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

Pooraa saṫgur milæ milaa▫é.

Meeting the Perfect True Guru, one meets with the Lord.
