Raag Maaroo, First Mehl, First House, Chau-Padas:

ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Ik▫oaⁿkaar saṫ naam karṫaa purakʰ nirbʰa▫o nirvær akaal mooraṫ ajoonee sæbʰaⁿ gur parsaaḋ.

One Universal Creator God. Truth Is The Name. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying. Beyond Birth. Self-Existent. By Guru’s Grace:

Salok.

Shalok:

ਸਾਜਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨ ਕੀ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਾ ਸਦ ਧੂਰਿ ॥

Saajan ṫéré charan kee ho▫é rahaa saḋ ḋʰoor.

O my Friend, I shall forever remain the dust of Your feet.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਹਾਰੀਆ ਪੇਖਉ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥੧॥

Naanak saraṇ ṫuhaaree▫aa pékʰa▫o saḋaa hajoor. ||1||

Nanak seeks Your protection, and beholds You ever-present, here and now. ||1||

ਸਬਦ ॥

Sabaḋ.

Shabad:

ਪਿਛਹੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਦੜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਲੇਹਿ ॥

Pichʰahu raaṫee saḋ▫ṛaa naam kʰasam kaa léhi.

Those who receive the call in the last hours of the night, chant the Name of their Lord and Master.

ਖੇਮੇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਸਰਾਇਚੇ ਦਿਸਨਿ ਰਥ ਪੀੜੇ ॥

Kʰémé chʰaṫar saraa▫iché ḋisan raṫʰ peeṛé.

Tents, canopies, pavilions and carriages are prepared and made ready for them.

ਜਿਨੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ॥੧॥

Jinee ṫéraa naam ḋʰi▫aa▫i▫aa ṫin ka▫o saḋ milé. ||1||

You send out the call, Lord, to those who meditate on Your Name. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਮੈ ਕਰਮਹੀਣ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ॥

Baabaa mæ karamheeṇ kooṛi▫aar.

Father, I am unfortunate, a fraud.

ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਧਾ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Naam na paa▫i▫aa ṫéraa anḋʰaa bʰaram bʰoolaa man méraa. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

I have not found Your Name; my mind is blind and deluded by doubt. ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਪਰਫੁੜੇ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਮਾਇ ॥

Saaḋ keeṫé ḋukʰ parfuṛé poorab likʰé maa▫é.

I have enjoyed the tastes, and now my pains have come to fruition; such is my preordained destiny, O my mother.

ਸੁਖ ਥੋੜੇ ਦੁਖ ਅਗਲੇ ਦੂਖੇ ਦੂਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੨॥

Sukʰ ṫʰoṛé ḋukʰ aglé ḋookʰé ḋookʰ vihaa▫é. ||2||

Now my joys are few, and my pains are many. In utter agony, I pass my life. ||2||

ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੇਲੁ ॥

vichʰuṛi▫aa kaa ki▫aa veechʰuṛæ mili▫aa kaa ki▫aa mél.

What separation could be worse than separation from the Lord? For those who are united with Him, what other union can there be?

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਖੇਲੁ ॥੩॥

Saahib so salaahee▫æ jin kar ḋékʰi▫aa kʰél. ||3||

Praise the Lord and Master, who, having created this play, beholds it. ||3||

ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਮੇਲਾਵੜਾ ਇਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਕੀਤੇ ਭੋਗ ॥

Sanjogee mélaavaṛaa in ṫan keeṫé bʰog.

By good destiny, this union comes about; this body enjoys its pleasures.

ਵਿਜੋਗੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੀ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥੪॥੧॥

vijogee mil vichʰuṛé Naanak bʰee sanjog. ||4||1||

Those who have lost their destiny, suffer separation from this union. O Nanak! They may still be united once again! ||4||1||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo mėhlaa 1.

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਮਿਲਿ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

Mil maaṫ piṫaa pind kamaa▫i▫aa.

The union of the mother and father brings the body into being.

ਤਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

Ṫin karṫæ lékʰ likʰaa▫i▫aa.

The Creator inscribes upon it the inscription of its destiny.

ਲਿਖੁ ਦਾਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

Likʰ ḋaaṫ joṫ vadi▫aa▫ee.

According to this inscription, gifts, light and glorious greatness are received.

ਮਿਲਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੧॥

Mil maa▫i▫aa suraṫ gavaa▫ee. ||1||

Joining with Maya, the spiritual consciousness is lost. ||1||

ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਰਸਹਿ ਮਾਣਾ ॥

Moorakʰ man kaahé karsėh maaṇaa.

O foolish mind, why are you so proud?

ਉਠਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Utʰ chalṇaa kʰasmæ bʰaaṇaa. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

You shall have to arise and depart when it pleases your Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||

ਤਜਿ ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

Ṫaj saaḋ sahj sukʰ ho▫ee.

Abandon the tastes of the world, and find intuitive peace.

ਘਰ ਛਡਣੇ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

Gʰar chʰadṇé rahæ na ko▫ee.

All must abandon their worldly homes; no one remains here forever.

ਕਿਛੁ ਖਾਜੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਧਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥

Kichʰ kʰaajæ kichʰ ḋʰar jaa▫ee▫æ.

Eat some, and save the rest,

ਜੇ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਆਈਐ ॥੨॥

Jé baahuṛ ḋunee▫aa aa▫ee▫æ. ||2||

if you are destined to return to the world again. ||2||

ਸਜੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਪਟੁ ਹਢਾਏ ॥

Saj kaa▫i▫aa pat hadʰaa▫é.

He adorns his body and dresses in silk robes.

ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਲਾਏ ॥

Furmaa▫is bahuṫ chalaa▫é.

He issues all sorts of commands.

ਕਰਿ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਸੋਵੈ ॥

Kar séj sukʰaalee sovæ.

Preparing his comfortable bed, he sleeps.

ਹਥੀ ਪਉਦੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਰੋਵੈ ॥੩॥

Haṫʰee pa▫uḋee kaahé rovæ. ||3||

When he falls into the hands of the Messenger of Death, what good does it do to cry out? ||3||

ਘਰ ਘੁੰਮਣਵਾਣੀ ਭਾਈ ॥

Gʰar gʰummaṇvaaṇee bʰaa▫ee.

Household affairs are whirlpools of entanglements, O Siblings of Destiny.
