ਤਾ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਜਾ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

Ṫaa milee▫æ jaa la▫é milaa▫é.

They alone meet Him, whom the Lord causes to meet.

ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰੇ ਨੀਤ ॥

Guṇvanṫee guṇ saaré neeṫ.

The virtuous soul bride continually contemplates His Virtues.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਮੀਤ ॥੧੭॥

Naanak gurmaṫ milee▫æ meeṫ. ||17||

O Nanak! Following the Guru’s Teachings, one meets the Lord, the true friend. ||17||

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਗਾਲੈ ॥

Kaam kroḋʰ kaa▫i▫aa ka▫o gaalæ.

Unfulfilled sexual desire and unresolved anger waste the body away,

ਜਿਉ ਕੰਚਨ ਸੋਹਾਗਾ ਢਾਲੈ ॥

Ji▫o kanchan sohaagaa dʰaalæ.

as gold is dissolved by borax.

ਕਸਿ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਸਹੈ ਸੁ ਤਾਉ ॥

Kas kasvatee sahæ so ṫaa▫o.

The gold is touched to the touchstone, and tested by fire;

ਨਦਰਿ ਸਰਾਫ ਵੰਨੀ ਸਚੜਾਉ ॥

Naḋar saraaf vannee sachṛaa▫o.

when its pure color shows through, it is pleasing to the eye of the assayer.

ਜਗਤੁ ਪਸੂ ਅਹੰ ਕਾਲੁ ਕਸਾਈ ॥

Jagaṫ pasoo ahaⁿ kaal kasaa▫ee.

The world is a beast, and arrogant Death is the butcher.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

Kar karṫæ karṇee kar paa▫ee.

The created beings of the Creator receive the karma of their actions.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

Jin keeṫee ṫin keemaṫ paa▫ee.

He who created the world, knows its worth.

ਹੋਰ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੮॥

Hor ki▫aa kahee▫æ kichʰ kahaṇ na jaa▫ee. ||18||

What else can be said? There is nothing at all to say. ||18||

ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ॥

Kʰojaṫ kʰojaṫ amriṫ pee▫aa.

Searching, searching, I drink the Ambrosial Nectar.

ਖਿਮਾ ਗਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥

Kʰimaa gahee man saṫgur ḋee▫aa.

I have adopted the way of tolerance, and given my mind to the True Guru.

ਖਰਾ ਖਰਾ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

Kʰaraa kʰaraa aakʰæ sabʰ ko▫é.

Everyone calls himself true and genuine.

ਖਰਾ ਰਤਨੁ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਹੋਇ ॥

Kʰaraa raṫan jug chaaré ho▫é.

He alone is true, who obtains the jewel throughout the four ages.

ਖਾਤ ਪੀਅੰਤ ਮੂਏ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥

Kʰaaṫ pee▫anṫ moo▫é nahee jaani▫aa.

Eating and drinking, one dies, but still does not know.

ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਮੂਏ ਜਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥

Kʰin mėh moo▫é jaa sabaḋ pachʰaani▫aa.

He dies in an instant, when he realizes the Word of the Shabad.

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਰਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥

Asṫʰir cheeṫ maran man maani▫aa.

His consciousness becomes permanently stable, and his mind accepts death.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥੧੯॥

Gur kirpaa ṫé naam pachʰaani▫aa. ||19||

By Guru’s Grace, he realizes the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||19||

ਗਗਨ ਗੰਭੀਰੁ ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

Gagan gambʰeer gagnanṫar vaas.

The Profound Lord dwells in the sky of the mind, the Tenth Gate;

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥

Guṇ gaavæ sukʰ sahj nivaas.

singing His Glorious Praises, one dwells in intuitive poise and peace.

ਗਇਆ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

Ga▫i▫aa na aavæ aa▫é na jaa▫é.

He does not go to come, or come to go.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

Gur parsaaḋ rahæ liv laa▫é.

By Guru’s Grace, he remains lovingly focused on the Lord.

ਗਗਨੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਅਨਾਥੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ॥

Gagan agamm anaaṫʰ ajonee.

The Lord of the mind-sky is inaccessible, independent and beyond birth.

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਸਗੋਨੀ ॥

Asṫʰir cheeṫ samaaḋʰ sagonee.

The most worthy Samadhi is to keep the consciousness stable, focused on Him.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਨ ਜੂਨੀ ॥

Har naam chéṫ fir pavėh na joonee.

Remembering the Lord’s Name, one is not subject to reincarnation.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਰੁ ਹੋਰ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨੀ ॥੨੦॥

Gurmaṫ saar hor naam bihoonee. ||20||

The Guru’s Teachings are the most Excellent; all other ways lack the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||20||

ਘਰ ਦਰ ਫਿਰਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ॥

Gʰar ḋar fir ṫʰaakee bahuṫéré.

Wandering to countless doorsteps and homes, I have grown weary.

ਜਾਤਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

Jaaṫ asaⁿkʰ anṫ nahee méré.

My incarnations are countless, without limit.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਧੀਆ ॥

Kéṫé maaṫ piṫaa suṫ ḋʰee▫aa.

I have had so many mothers and fathers, sons and daughters.

ਕੇਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੂਆ ॥

Kéṫé gur chélé fun hoo▫aa.

I have had so many gurus and disciples.

ਕਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੂਆ ॥

Kaaché gur ṫé mukaṫ na hoo▫aa.

Through a false guru, liberation is not found.

ਕੇਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥

Kéṫee naar var ék samaal.

There are so many brides of the One Husband Lord - consider this.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

Gurmukʰ maraṇ jeevaṇ parabʰ naal.

The Gurmukh dies, and lives with God.

ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਢੂਢਿ ਘਰੈ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Ḋah ḋis dʰoodʰ gʰaræ mėh paa▫i▫aa.

Searching in the ten directions, I found Him within my own home.

ਮੇਲੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੨੧॥

Mél bʰa▫i▫aa saṫguroo milaa▫i▫aa. ||21||

I have met Him; the True Guru has led me to meet Him. ||21||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੈ ॥

Gurmukʰ gaavæ gurmukʰ bolæ.

The Gurmukh sings, and the Gurmukh speaks.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋੁਲਾਵੈ ਤੋਲੈ ॥

Gurmukʰ ṫol ṫolaavæ ṫolæ.

The Gurmukh evaluates the value of the Lord, and inspires others to evaluate Him as well.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਨਿਸੰਗੁ ॥

Gurmukʰ aavæ jaa▫é nisang.

The Gurmukh comes and goes without fear.

ਪਰਹਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਜਲਾਇ ਕਲੰਕੁ ॥

Par▫har mæl jalaa▫é kalank.

His filth is taken away, and his stains are burnt off.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

Gurmukʰ naaḋ béḋ beechaar.

The Gurmukh contemplates the sound current of the Naad for his Vedas.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਚਜੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥

Gurmukʰ majan chaj achaar.

The Gurmukh’s cleansing bath is the performance of good deeds.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

Gurmukʰ sabaḋ amriṫ hæ saar.

For the Gurmukh, the Shabad is the most excellent Ambrosial Nectar.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੨੨॥

Naanak gurmukʰ paavæ paar. ||22||

O Nanak! The Gurmukh crosses over. ||22||

ਚੰਚਲੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਨ ਰਹਈ ਠਾਇ ॥

Chanchal cheeṫ na rah▫ee tʰaa▫é.

The fickle consciousness does not remain stable.

ਚੋਰੀ ਮਿਰਗੁ ਅੰਗੂਰੀ ਖਾਇ ॥

Choree mirag angooree kʰaa▫é.

The deer secretly nibbles at the green sprouts.

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ਚੀਤ ॥

Charan kamal ur ḋʰaaré cheeṫ.

One who enshrines the Lord’s lotus feet in his heart and consciousness

ਚਿਰੁ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਚੇਤਨੁ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤ ॥

Chir jeevan chéṫan niṫ neeṫ.

lives long, always remembering the Lord.

ਚਿੰਤਤ ਹੀ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

Chinṫaṫ hee ḋeesæ sabʰ ko▫é.

Everyone has worries and cares.

ਚੇਤਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਤਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

Cheeṫėh ék ṫahee sukʰ ho▫é.

He alone finds peace, who thinks of the One Lord.

ਚਿਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਰਾਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

Chiṫ vasæ raachæ har naa▫é.

When the Lord dwells in the consciousness, and one is absorbed in the Lord’s Name,

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨੩॥

Mukaṫ bʰa▫i▫aa paṫ si▫o gʰar jaa▫é. ||23||

one is liberated, and returns home with honor. ||23||

ਛੀਜੈ ਦੇਹ ਖੁਲੈ ਇਕ ਗੰਢਿ ॥

Chʰeejæ ḋéh kʰulæ ik gandʰ.

The body falls apart, when one knot is untied.

ਛੇਆ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਜਗਿ ਹੰਢਿ ॥

Chʰé▫aa niṫ ḋékʰhu jag handʰ.

Behold, the world is on the decline; it will be totally destroyed.

ਧੂਪ ਛਾਵ ਜੇ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

Ḋʰoop chʰaav jé sam kar jaaṇæ.

Only one who looks alike upon sunshine and shade

ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥

Banḋʰan kaat mukaṫ gʰar aaṇæ.

has his bonds shattered; he is liberated and returns home.

ਛਾਇਆ ਛੂਛੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥

Chʰaa▫i▫aa chʰoochʰee jagaṫ bʰulaanaa.

Maya is empty and petty; she has defrauded the world.

ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਧੁਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ॥

Likʰi▫aa kiraṫ ḋʰuré parvaanaa.

Such destiny is preordained by past actions.

ਛੀਜੈ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਜਰੂਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

Chʰeejæ joban jaroo▫aa sir kaal.

Youth is wasting away; old age and death hover above the head.
