ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Bilaaval mėhlaa 1.

Bilaaval, First Mehl:

ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਮਨਸਾ ਕਰੈ ॥

Man kaa kahi▫aa mansaa karæ.

The human acts according to the wishes of the mind.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਉਚਰੈ ॥

Ih man punn paap uchræ.

This mind feeds on virtue and vice.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

Maa▫i▫aa maḋ maaṫé ṫaripaṫ na aavæ.

Intoxicated with the wine of Maya, satisfaction never comes.

ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

Ṫaripaṫ mukaṫ man saachaa bʰaavæ. ||1||

Satisfaction and liberation come only to one whose mind is pleasing to the True Lord. ||1||

ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਖੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥

Ṫan ḋʰan kalaṫ sabʰ ḋékʰ abʰimaanaa.

Gazing upon his body, wealth, wife and all his possessions, he is proud.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bin naavæ kichʰ sang na jaanaa. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

But without the Name of the Lord, nothing shall go along with him. ||1||Pause||

ਕੀਚਹਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥

Keechėh ras bʰog kʰusee▫aa man kéree.

He enjoys tastes, pleasures and joys in his mind.

ਧਨੁ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤਨੁ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥

Ḋʰan lokaaⁿ ṫan bʰasmæ dʰéree.

But his wealth will pass on to other people, and his body will be reduced to ashes.

ਖਾਕੂ ਖਾਕੁ ਰਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਫੈਲੁ ॥

Kʰaakoo kʰaak ralæ sabʰ fæl.

The entire expanse, like dust, shall mix with dust.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਮੈਲੁ ॥੨॥

Bin sabḋæ nahee uṫræ mæl. ||2||

Without the Word of the Shabad, his filth is not removed. ||2||

ਗੀਤ ਰਾਗ ਘਨ ਤਾਲ ਸਿ ਕੂਰੇ ॥

Geeṫ raag gʰan ṫaal sė kooré.

The various songs, tunes and rhythms are false.

ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੂਰੇ ॥

Ṫarihu guṇ upjæ binsæ ḋooré.

Trapped by the three qualities, people come and go, far from the Lord.

ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

Ḋoojee ḋurmaṫ ḋaraḋ na jaa▫é.

In duality, the pain of their evil-mindedness does not leave them.

ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਾਰੂ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੩॥

Chʰootæ gurmukʰ ḋaaroo guṇ gaa▫é. ||3||

But the Gurmukh is emancipated by taking the medicine, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||

ਧੋਤੀ ਊਜਲ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ॥

Ḋʰoṫee oojal ṫilak gal maalaa.

He may wear a clean loin-cloth, apply the ceremonial mark to his forehead, and wear a mala around his neck;

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਨਾਟ ਸਾਲਾ ॥

Anṫar kroḋʰ paṛėh naat saalaa.

but if there is anger within him, he is merely reading his part, like an actor in a play.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦੁ ਪੀਆ ॥

Naam visaar maa▫i▫aa maḋ pee▫aa.

Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he drinks in the wine of Maya.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੪॥

Bin gur bʰagaṫ naahee sukʰ ṫʰee▫aa. ||4||

Without devotional worship to the Guru, there is no peace. ||4||

ਸੂਕਰ ਸੁਆਨ ਗਰਧਭ ਮੰਜਾਰਾ ॥

Sookar su▫aan garḋʰabʰ manjaaraa.

The human is a pig, a dog, a donkey, a cat,

ਪਸੂ ਮਲੇਛ ਨੀਚ ਚੰਡਾਲਾ ॥

Pasoo maléchʰ neech chandalaa.

a beast, a filthy, lowly wretch, an outcast,

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਹੁ ਫੇਰੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਐ ॥

Gur ṫé muhu féré ṫinĥ jon bʰavaa▫ee▫æ.

if he turns his face away from the Guru. He shall wander in reincarnation.

ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੫॥

Banḋʰan baaḋʰi▫aa aa▫ee▫æ jaa▫ee▫æ. ||5||

Bound in bondage, he comes and goes. ||5||

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਲਹੈ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ॥

Gur sévaa ṫé lahæ paḋaaraṫʰ.

Serving the Guru, the treasure is found.

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥੁ ॥

Hirḋæ naam saḋaa kirṫaaraṫʰ.

With the Naam in the heart, one always prospers.

ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

Saachee ḋargėh poochʰ na ho▫é.

And in the Court of the True Lord, you shall not be called to account.

ਮਾਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੀਝੈ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੬॥

Maané hukam seejʰæ ḋar so▫é. ||6||

One who obeys the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, is approved at the Lord’s Door. ||6||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

Saṫgur milæ ṫa ṫis ka▫o jaaṇæ.

Meeting the True Guru, one knows the Lord.

ਰਹੈ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

Rahæ rajaa▫ee hukam pachʰaaṇæ.

Understanding the Hukam of His Command, one acts according to His Will.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

Hukam pachʰaaṇ sachæ ḋar vaas.

Understanding the Hukam of His Command, he dwells in the Court of the True Lord.

ਕਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਲ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਏ ਨਾਸੁ ॥੭॥

Kaal bikaal sabaḋ bʰa▫é naas. ||7||

Through the Shabad, death and birth are ended. ||7||

ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ॥

Rahæ aṫeeṫ jaaṇæ sabʰ ṫis kaa.

He remains detached, knowing that everything belongs to God.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪੈ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ॥

Ṫan man arpæ hæ ih jis kaa.

He dedicates his body and mind unto the One who owns them.

ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

Naa oh aavæ naa oh jaa▫é.

He does not come, and he does not go.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੨॥

Naanak saaché saach samaa▫é. ||8||2||

O Nanak! Absorbed in Truth, he merges in the True Lord. ||8||2||

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ਘਰੁ ੧੦

Bilaaval mėhlaa 3 asatpaḋee gʰar 10

Bilaaval, Third Mehl, Ashtapadees, Tenth House:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Ik▫oaⁿkaar saṫgur parsaaḋ.

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਜਗੁ ਕਊਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਚੁੰਚ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

Jag ka▫oo▫aa mukʰ chunch gi▫aan.

The world is like a crow; with its beak, it croaks spiritual wisdom.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥

Anṫar lobʰ jʰootʰ abʰimaan.

But deep within there is greed, falsehood and pride.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਾਜੁ ਲਹਗੁ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੧॥

Bin naavæ paaj lahag niḋaan. ||1||

Without the Name of the Lord, your thin outer covering shall wear off, you fool. ||1||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤਿ ॥

Saṫgur sév naam vasæ man cheeṫ.

Serving the True Guru, the Naam shall dwell in your conscious mind.

ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gur bʰété har naam chéṫaavæ bin naavæ hor jʰootʰ pareeṫ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

Meeting with the Guru, the Name of the Lord comes to mind. Without the Name, other loves are false. ||1||Pause||

ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥

Gur kahi▫aa saa kaar kamaavahu.

So, do that work, which the Guru tells you to do.

ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨੑਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹੁ ॥

Sabaḋ cheenėh sahj gʰar aavhu.

Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, you shall come to the home of celestial bliss.

ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੨॥

Saachæ naa▫é vadaa▫ee paavhu. ||2||

Through the True Name, you shall obtain glorious greatness. ||2||

ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਲੋਕ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥

Aap na boojʰæ lok bujʰaavæ.

One who does not understand his own self, but still tries to instruct others,

ਮਨ ਕਾ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

Man kaa anḋʰaa anḋʰ kamaavæ.

is mentally blind, and acts in blindness.

ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਠਉਰੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

Ḋar gʰar mahal tʰa▫ur kæsé paavæ. ||3||

How can he ever find a home and a place of rest, in the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence? ||3||

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥

Har jee▫o sévee▫æ anṫarjaamee.

Serve the Dear Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts;

ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥

Gʰat gʰat anṫar jis kee joṫ samaanee.

deep within each and every heart, His Light is shining forth.

ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਚਲੈ ਪਹਨਾਮੀ ॥੪॥

Ṫis naal ki▫aa chalæ pėhnaamee. ||4||

How can anyone hide anything from Him? ||4||
