138 ਆਇਆ ਗਇਆ ਮੁਇਆ ਨਾਉ ॥ Aa▫i▫aa ga▫i▫aa mu▫i▫aa naa▫o. He came and he went, and now, even his name has died. ਪਿਛੈ ਪਤਲਿ ਸਦਿਹੁ ਕਾਵ ॥ Pichʰæ paṫal saḋihu kaav. After he left, food was offered on leaves, and the birds were called to come and eat. ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ Naanak manmukʰ anḋʰ pi▫aar. O Nanak! The self-willed Manmukhs love the darkness. ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਡੁਬਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ Baajʰ guroo dubaa sansaar. ||2|| Without the Guru, the world is drowning. ||2|| ਮਃ ੧ ॥ Mėhlaa 1. First Mehl: ਦਸ ਬਾਲਤਣਿ ਬੀਸ ਰਵਣਿ ਤੀਸਾ ਕਾ ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ Ḋas baalṫaṇ bees ravaṇ ṫeesaa kaa sunḋar kahaavæ. At the age of ten, he is a child; at twenty, a youth, and at thirty, he is called handsome. ਚਾਲੀਸੀ ਪੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਪਚਾਸੀ ਪਗੁ ਖਿਸੈ ਸਠੀ ਕੇ ਬੋਢੇਪਾ ਆਵੈ ॥ Chaaleesee pur ho▫é pachaasee pag kʰisæ satʰee ké bodʰépaa aavæ. At forty, he is full of life; at fifty, his foot slips, and at sixty, old age is upon him. ਸਤਰਿ ਕਾ ਮਤਿਹੀਣੁ ਅਸੀਹਾਂ ਕਾ ਵਿਉਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ Saṫar kaa maṫiheeṇ aseehaaⁿ kaa vi▫uhaar na paavæ. At seventy, he loses his intellect, and at eighty, he cannot perform his duties. ਨਵੈ ਕਾ ਸਿਹਜਾਸਣੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਪ ਬਲੁ ॥ Navæ kaa sihjaasṇee mool na jaaṇæ ap bal. At ninety, he lies in his bed, and he cannot understand his weakness. ਢੰਢੋਲਿਮੁ ਢੂਢਿਮੁ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗੁ ਧੂਏ ਕਾ ਧਵਲਹਰੁ ॥੩॥ Dʰandʰolim dʰoodʰim ditʰ mæ Naanak jag ḋʰoo▫é kaa ḋʰavalhar. ||3|| After seeking and searching for such a long time, O Nanak! I have seen that the world is just a mansion of smoke. ||3|| ਪਉੜੀ ॥ Pa▫oṛee. Pauree: ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਿ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਤੀ ॥ Ṫooⁿ karṫaa purakʰ agamm hæ aap sarisat upaaṫee. You, O Creator Lord, are Unfathomable. You Yourself created the Universe, ਰੰਗ ਪਰੰਗ ਉਪਾਰਜਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਤੀ ॥ Rang parang upaarjanaa baho baho biḋʰ bʰaaṫee. its colors, qualities and varieties, in so many ways and forms. ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈਐ ਸਭੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਤੁਮਾਤੀ ॥ Ṫooⁿ jaaṇėh jin upaa▫ee▫æ sabʰ kʰél ṫumaaṫee. You created it, and You alone understand it. It is all Your Play. ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਉਠਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥ Ik aavahi ik jaahi utʰ bin naavæ mar jaaṫee. Some come, and some arise and depart; but without the Name, all are bound to die. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲਿਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥ Gurmukʰ rang chalooli▫aa rang har rang raaṫee. The Gurmukhs are imbued with the deep crimson color of the poppy; they are dyed in the color of the Lord’s Love. ਸੋ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਸਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤੀ ॥ So sévhu saṫ niranjano har purakʰ biḋʰaaṫee. So, serve the True and Pure Lord, the Supremely Powerful Architect of Destiny. ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਵਡਾਤੀ ॥ Ṫooⁿ aapé aap sujaaṇ hæ vad purakʰ vadaaṫee. You Yourself are All-knowing. O Lord, You are the Greatest of the Great! ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਚਿਆ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਜਾਤੀ ॥੧॥ Jo man chiṫ ṫuḋʰ ḋʰi▫aa▫iḋé méré sachi▫aa bal bal ha▫o ṫin jaaṫee. ||1|| O my True Lord, I am a sacrifice, a humble sacrifice, to those who meditate on You within their conscious mind. ||1|| ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ Salok mėhlaa 1. Shalok, First Mehl: ਜੀਉ ਪਾਇ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਰਖਿਆ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਇ ॥ Jee▫o paa▫é ṫan saaji▫aa rakʰi▫aa baṇaṫ baṇaa▫é. He placed the soul in the body which He had fashioned. He protects the Creation which He has created. ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ Akʰee ḋékʰæ jihvaa bolæ kannee suraṫ samaa▫é. With their eyes, they see, and with their tongues, they speak; with their ears, they bring the mind to awareness. ਪੈਰੀ ਚਲੈ ਹਥੀ ਕਰਣਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਪੈਨੈ ਖਾਇ ॥ Pæree chalæ haṫʰee karṇaa ḋiṫaa pænæ kʰaa▫é. With their feet, they walk, and with their hands, they work; they wear and eat whatever is given. ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ Jin rach rachi▫aa ṫisėh na jaaṇæ anḋʰaa anḋʰ kamaa▫é. They do not know the One who created the Creation. The blind fools do their dark deeds. ਜਾ ਭਜੈ ਤਾ ਠੀਕਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾੜਤ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ Jaa bʰajæ ṫaa tʰeekar hovæ gʰaaṛaṫ gʰaṛee na jaa▫é. When the pitcher of the body breaks and shatters into pieces, it cannot be re-created again. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ Naanak gur bin naahi paṫ paṫ viṇ paar na paa▫é. ||1|| O Nanak! Without the Guru, there is no honor; without honor, no one is carried across. ||1|| ਮਃ ੨ ॥ Mėhlaa 2. Second Mehl: ਦੇਂਦੇ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਦਿਤਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਐਸਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥ Ḋéⁿḋé ṫʰaavhu ḋiṫaa changa manmukʰ æsaa jaaṇee▫æ. They prefer the gift, instead of the Giver; such is the way of the self-willed Manmukhs. ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥ Suraṫ maṫ chaṫuraa▫ee ṫaa kee ki▫aa kar aakʰ vakʰaaṇee▫æ. What can anyone say about their intelligence, their understanding or their cleverness? ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਹਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥ Anṫar bahi kæ karam kamaavæ so chahu kundee jaaṇee▫æ. The deeds which one commits, while sitting in one’s own home, are known far and wide, in the four directions. ਜੋ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਰਮ ਨਾਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਾਪਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥ Jo ḋʰaram kamaavæ ṫis ḋʰaram naa▫o hovæ paap kamaaṇæ paapee jaaṇee▫æ. One who lives righteously is known as righteous; one who commits sins is known as a sinner. ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥ Ṫooⁿ aapé kʰél karahi sabʰ karṫé ki▫aa ḋoojaa aakʰ vakʰaaṇee▫æ. You Yourself enact the entire play, O Creator. Why should we speak of any other? ਜਿਚਰੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੂੰ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਦਿਖਾ ਸਿਆਣੀਐ ॥ Jichar ṫéree joṫ ṫichar joṫee vich ṫooⁿ bolėh viṇ joṫee ko▫ee kichʰ karihu ḋikʰaa si▫aaṇee▫æ. As long as Your Light is within the body, You speak through that Light. Without Your Light, who can do anything? Show me any such cleverness! ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਇਕੋ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨॥ Naanak gurmukʰ naḋree aa▫i▫aa har iko sugʰaṛ sujaaṇee▫æ. ||2|| O Nanak! The Lord alone is Perfect and All-knowing; He is revealed to the Gurmukh. ||2|| ਪਉੜੀ ॥ Pa▫oṛee. Pauree: ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ Ṫuḋʰ aapé jagaṫ upaa▫é kæ ṫuḋʰ aapé ḋʰanḋʰæ laa▫i▫aa. You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself put it to work. ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥ Moh tʰag▫ulee paa▫é kæ ṫuḋʰ aaphu jagaṫ kʰu▫aa▫i▫aa. Administering the drug of emotional attachment, You Yourself have led the world astray. ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਹੈ ਨਹ ਤਿਪਤੈ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਿਹਾਇਆ ॥ Ṫisnaa anḋar agan hæ nah ṫipṫæ bʰukʰaa ṫihaa▫i▫aa. The fire of desire is deep within; unsatisfied, people remain hungry and thirsty. ਸਹਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਇਆ ॥ Sahsaa ih sansaar hæ mar jammæ aa▫i▫aa jaa▫i▫aa. This world is an illusion; it dies and it is re-born-it comes and it goes in reincarnation. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਸਭਿ ਥਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥ Bin saṫgur moh na ṫut▫ee sabʰ ṫʰaké karam kamaa▫i▫aa. Without the True Guru, emotional attachment is not broken. All have grown weary of performing empty rituals. ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸੁਖਿ ਰਜਾ ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ Gurmaṫee naam ḋʰi▫aa▫ee▫æ sukʰ rajaa jaa ṫuḋʰ bʰaa▫i▫aa. Those who follow the Guru’s Teachings meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Filled with a joyful peace, they surrender to Your Will. ਕੁਲੁ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ Kul uḋʰaaré aapṇaa ḋʰan jaṇéḋee maa▫i▫aa. They save their families and ancestors; blessed are the mothers who gave birth to them. |
