1411 ਕੀਚੜਿ ਹਾਥੁ ਨ ਬੂਡਈ ਏਕਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥ Keechaṛ haaṫʰ na bood▫ee ékaa naḋar nihaal. One who sees the One and Only Lord with his eyes - his hands shall not get muddy and dirty. ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਸਚੀ ਪਾਲਿ ॥੮॥ Naanak gurmukʰ ubré gur sarvar sachee paal. ||8|| O Nanak! The Gurmukhs are saved; the Guru has surrounded the ocean with the embankment of Truth. ||8|| ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਜਲੁ ਲੋੜਿ ਲਹੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਨਿਧਿ ਜਲੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ Agan maræ jal loṛ lahu viṇ gur niḋʰ jal naahi. If you wish to put out the fire, then look for water; without the Guru, the ocean of water is not found. ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥ Janam maræ bʰarmaa▫ee▫æ jé lakʰ karam kamaahi. You shall continue to wander lost in reincarnation through birth and death, even if you do thousands of other deeds. ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥ Jam jaagaaṫ na lag▫ee jé chalæ saṫgur bʰaa▫é. But you shall not be taxed by the Messenger of Death, if you walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਮਰ ਪਦੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੈ ਮੇਲਾਇ ॥੯॥ Naanak nirmal amar paḋ gur har mélæ mélaa▫é. ||9|| O Nanak! The immaculate, immortal status is obtained, and the Guru will unite you in the Lord’s Union. ||9|| ਕਲਰ ਕੇਰੀ ਛਪੜੀ ਕਊਆ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ Kalar kéree chʰapṛee ka▫oo▫aa mal mal naa▫é. The crow rubs and washes itself in the mud puddle. ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਅਵਗੁਣੀ ਚਿੰਜੁ ਭਰੀ ਗੰਧੀ ਆਇ ॥ Man ṫan mælaa avguṇee binn bʰaree ganḋʰee aa▫é. Its mind and body are polluted with its own mistakes and demerits, and its beak is filled with dirt. ਸਰਵਰੁ ਹੰਸਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਕਾਗ ਕੁਪੰਖੀ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ Sarvar hans na jaaṇi▫aa kaag kupankʰee sang. The swan in the pool associated with the crow, not knowing that it was evil. ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ Saakaṫ si▫o æsee pareeṫ hæ boojʰhu gi▫aanee rang. Such is the love of the faithless cynic; understand this, O spiritually wise ones, through love and devotion. ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥ Sanṫ sabʰaa jækaar kar gurmukʰ karam kamaa▫o. So, proclaim the victory of the Society of the Saints, and act as Gurmukh. ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨੑਾਵਣੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਦਰੀਆਉ ॥੧੦॥ Nirmal nĥaavaṇ naankaa gur ṫiraṫʰ ḋaree▫aa▫o. ||10|| Immaculate and pure is that cleansing bath, O Nanak! At the sacred shrine of the Guru’s river. ||10|| ਜਨਮੇ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਕਿਆ ਗਣੀ ਜਾਂ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਉ ॥ Janmé kaa fal ki▫aa gaṇee jaaⁿ har bʰagaṫ na bʰaa▫o. What should I account as the rewards of this human life, if one does not feel love and devotion to the Lord? ਪੈਧਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥ Pæḋʰaa kʰaaḋʰaa baaḋ hæ jaaⁿ man ḋoojaa bʰaa▫o. Wearing clothes and eating food is useless, if the mind is filled with the love of duality. ਵੇਖਣੁ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਹੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠਾ ਆਲਾਉ ॥ vékʰaṇ sunṇaa jʰootʰ hæ mukʰ jʰootʰaa aalaa▫o. Seeing and hearing is false, if one speaks lies. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਤੂ ਹੋਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧੧॥ Naanak naam salaahi ṫoo hor ha▫umæ aava▫o jaa▫o. ||11|| O Nanak! Praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord; everything else is coming and going in egotism. ||11|| ਹੈਨਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਣੇ ਫੈਲ ਫਕੜੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੧੨॥ Hæn virlé naahee gʰaṇé fæl fakaṛ sansaar. ||12|| The Saints are few and far between; everything else in the world is just a pompous show. ||12|| ਨਾਨਕ ਲਗੀ ਤੁਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਜੀਵਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾਣੁ ॥ Naanak lagee ṫur maræ jeevaṇ naahee ṫaaṇ. O Nanak! One who is struck by the Lord dies instantaneously; the power to live is lost. ਚੋਟੈ ਸੇਤੀ ਜੋ ਮਰੈ ਲਗੀ ਸਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ Chotæ séṫee jo maræ lagee saa parvaaṇ. If someone dies by such a stroke, then he is accepted. ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਗੈ ਲਗੀ ਤਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ Jis no laa▫é ṫis lagæ lagee ṫaa parvaaṇ. He alone is struck, who is struck by the Lord; after such a stroke, he is approved. ਪਿਰਮ ਪੈਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ॥੧੩॥ Piram pækaam na niklæ laa▫i▫aa ṫin sujaaṇ. ||13|| The arrow of love, shot by the All-knowing Lord, cannot be pulled out. ||13|| ਭਾਂਡਾ ਧੋਵੈ ਕਉਣੁ ਜਿ ਕਚਾ ਸਾਜਿਆ ॥ Bʰaaⁿdaa ḋʰovæ ka▫uṇ jė kachaa saaji▫aa. Who can wash the unbaked clay pot? ਧਾਤੂ ਪੰਜਿ ਰਲਾਇ ਕੂੜਾ ਪਾਜਿਆ ॥ Ḋʰaaṫoo panj ralaa▫é kooṛaa paaji▫aa. Joining the five elements together, the Lord made a false cover. ਭਾਂਡਾ ਆਣਗੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਜਾਂ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥ Bʰaaⁿdaa aaṇag raas jaaⁿ ṫis bʰaavsee. When it pleases Him, He makes it right. ਪਰਮ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਾਗਾਇ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਾਵਸੀ ॥੧੪॥ Param joṫ jaagaa▫é vaajaa vaavsee. ||14|| The supreme light shines forth, and the celestial song vibrates and resounds. ||14|| ਮਨਹੁ ਜਿ ਅੰਧੇ ਘੂਪ ਕਹਿਆ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ॥ Manhu jė anḋʰé gʰoop kahi▫aa biraḋ na jaaṇnee. Those who are totally blind in their minds, do not have the integrity to keep their word. ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਊਂਧੈ ਕਵਲ ਦਿਸਨਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੂਪ ॥ Man anḋʰæ ooⁿḋʰæ kaval ḋisan kʰaré karoop. With their blind minds, and their upside-down heart-lotus, they look totally ugly. ਇਕਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੁਝਨਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਰੂਪ ॥ Ik kahi jaaṇan kahi▫aa bujʰan ṫé nar sugʰaṛ saroop. Some know how to speak and understand what they are told. Those people are wise and good-looking. ਇਕਨਾ ਨਾਦੁ ਨ ਬੇਦੁ ਨ ਗੀਅ ਰਸੁ ਰਸੁ ਕਸੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੰਤਿ ॥ Iknaa naaḋ na béḋ na gee▫a ras ras kas na jaaṇanṫ. Some do not know the Sound-current of the Naad, spiritual wisdom or the joy of song. They do not even understand good and bad. ਇਕਨਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਸਰ ਅਖਰ ਕਾ ਭੇਉ ਨ ਲਹੰਤਿ ॥ Iknaa siḋʰ na buḋʰ na akal sar akʰar kaa bʰé▫o na laahanṫ. Some have no idea of perfection, wisdom or understanding; they know nothing about the mystery of the Word. ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਅਸਲਿ ਖਰ ਜਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੰਤ ॥੧੫॥ Naanak ṫé nar asal kʰar jė bin guṇ garab karanṫ. ||15|| O Nanak! Those people are really donkeys; they have no virtue or merit, but still, they are very proud. ||15|| ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੁ ਜੋ ਬਿੰਦੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥ So barahmaṇ jo binḋæ barahm. He alone is a Brahmin, who knows God. ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕਰਮੁ ॥ Jap ṫap sanjam kamaavæ karam. He chants and meditates, and practices austerity and good deeds. ਸੀਲ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਰਖੈ ਧਰਮੁ ॥ Seel sanṫokʰ kaa rakʰæ ḋʰaram. He keeps to the Dharma, with faith, humility and contentment. ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਕਤੁ ॥ Banḋʰan ṫoṛæ hovæ mukaṫ. Breaking his bonds, he is liberated. ਸੋਈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੁ ਪੂਜਣ ਜੁਗਤੁ ॥੧੬॥ So▫ee barahmaṇ poojaṇ jugaṫ. ||16|| Such a Brahmin is worthy of being worshiped. ||16|| ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੋ ਜੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਾ ਸੂਰੁ ॥ Kʰaṫree so jo karmaa kaa soor. He alone is a Kshatriya, who is a hero in good deeds. ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਕਾ ਕਰੈ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥ Punn ḋaan kaa karæ sareer. He uses his body to give in charity; ਖੇਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੀਜੈ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ Kʰéṫ pachʰaaṇæ beejæ ḋaan. he understands his farm, and plants the seeds of generosity. ਸੋ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ So kʰaṫree ḋargėh parvaaṇ. Such a Kshatriya is accepted in the Court of the Lord. ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਜੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ Lab lobʰ jé kooṛ kamaavæ. Whoever practices greed, possessiveness and falsehood, ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧੭॥ Apṇaa keeṫaa aapé paavæ. ||17|| shall receive the fruits of his own labors. ||17|| ਤਨੁ ਨ ਤਪਾਇ ਤਨੂਰ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਣੁ ਹਡ ਨ ਬਾਲਿ ॥ Ṫan na ṫapaa▫é ṫanoor ji▫o baalaṇ had na baal. Do not heat your body like a furnace, or burn your bones like firewood. ਸਿਰਿ ਪੈਰੀ ਕਿਆ ਫੇੜਿਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਿਰੀ ਸਮੑਾਲਿ ॥੧੮॥ Sir pæree ki▫aa féṛi▫aa anḋar piree samĥaal. ||18|| What have your head and feet done wrong? See your Husband Lord within yourself. ||18|| |
