ਭੂਲੇ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥

Bʰoolé sikʰ guroo samjʰaa▫é.

The Guru instructs His wandering Sikhs;

ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਦੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥

Ujʰaṛ jaaḋé maarag paa▫é.

if they go astray, He sets them on the right path.

ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਖਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

Ṫis gur sév saḋaa ḋin raaṫee ḋukʰ bʰanjan sang sakʰaaṫaa hé. ||13||

So, serve the Guru, forever, day and night; He is the Destroyer of pain - He is with you as your companion. ||13||

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥

Gur kee bʰagaṫ karahi ki▫aa paraaṇee.

O mortal being, what devotional worship have you performed to the Guru?

ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿ ਮਹੇਸਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥

Barahmæ in▫ḋar mahés na jaaṇee.

Even Brahma, Indra and Shiva do not know it.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਲਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

Saṫgur alakʰ kahhu ki▫o lakʰee▫æ jis bakʰsé ṫisėh pachʰaaṫaa hé. ||14||

Tell me, how can the unknowable True Guru be known? He alone attains this realization, whom the Lord forgives. ||14||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ॥

Anṫar parém paraapaṫ ḋarsan.

One who has love within, obtains the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.

ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਰਸਨੁ ॥

Gurbaaṇee si▫o pareeṫ so parsan.

One who enshrines love for the Word of the Guru’s Bani, meets with Him.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

Ahinis nirmal joṫ sabaa▫ee gʰat ḋeepak gurmukʰ jaaṫaa hé. ||15||

Day and night, the Gurmukh sees the immaculate Divine Light everywhere; this lamp illuminates his heart. ||15||

ਭੋਜਨ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥

Bʰojan gi▫aan mahaa ras meetʰaa.

The food of spiritual wisdom is the supremely sweet essence.

ਜਿਨਿ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਡੀਠਾ ॥

Jin chaakʰi▫aa ṫin ḋarsan deetʰaa.

Whoever tastes it, sees the Blessed Vision of the Lord’s Darshan.

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥

Ḋarsan ḋékʰ milé bæraagee man mansaa maar samaaṫaa hé. ||16||

Beholding His Darshan, the unattached one meets the Lord; subduing the mind’s desires, he merges into the Lord. ||16||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ॥

Saṫgur sévėh sé parḋʰaanaa.

Those who serve the True Guru are supreme and famous.

ਤਿਨ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥

Ṫin gʰat gʰat anṫar barahm pachʰaanaa.

Deep within each and every heart, they recognize God.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੫॥੧੧॥

Naanak har jas har jan kee sangaṫ ḋeejæ jin saṫgur har parabʰ jaaṫaa hé. ||17||5||11||

Please bless Nanak with the Lord’s Praises, and the Sangat, the Congregation of the Lord’s humble servants; through the True Guru, they know their Lord God. ||17||5||11||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo mėhlaa 1.

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

Saaché saahib sirjaṇhaaré.

The True Lord is the Creator of the Universe.

ਜਿਨਿ ਧਰ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਧਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

Jin ḋʰar chakar ḋʰaré veechaaré.

He established the worldly sphere and He contemplates it.

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

Aapé karṫaa kar kar vékʰæ saachaa véparvaahaa hé. ||1||

He Himself created the creation, and beholds it; He is True and independent. ||1||

ਵੇਕੀ ਵੇਕੀ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਏ ॥

vékee vékee janṫ upaa▫é.

He created beings of different kinds.

ਦੁਇ ਪੰਦੀ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹ ਚਲਾਏ ॥

Ḋu▫é panḋee ḋu▫é raah chalaa▫é.

The two travelers have set out in two directions.

ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

Gur pooré viṇ mukaṫ na ho▫ee sach naam jap laahaa hé. ||2||

Without the Perfect Guru, no one is liberated. Chanting the True Name, one profits. ||2||

ਪੜਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਰੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਾ ॥

Paṛėh manmukʰ par biḋʰ nahee jaanaa.

The self-willed Manmukhs read and study, but they do not know the way.

ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥

Naam na boojʰėh bʰaram bʰulaanaa.

They do not understand the Naam, the Name of the Lord; they wander, deluded by doubt.

ਲੈ ਕੈ ਵਢੀ ਦੇਨਿ ਉਗਾਹੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

Læ kæ vadʰee ḋén ugaahee ḋurmaṫ kaa gal faahaa hé. ||3||

They take bribes, and give false testimony; the noose of evil-mindedness is around their necks. ||3||

ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥

Simriṫ saasṫar paṛėh puraaṇaa.

They read the Smritis, the Shastras and the Puranas;

ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

vaaḋ vakaaṇėh ṫaṫ na jaaṇaa.

they argue and debate, but do not know the essence of reality.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚ ਸੂਚੇ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

viṇ gur pooré ṫaṫ na paa▫ee▫æ sach sooché sach raahaa hé. ||4||

Without the Perfect Guru, the essence of reality is not obtained. The true and pure beings walk the Path of Truth. ||4||

ਸਭ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖੈ ॥

Sabʰ saalaahé suṇ suṇ aakʰæ.

All praise God and listen, and listen and speak.

ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਾਖੈ ॥

Aapé ḋaanaa sach paraakʰæ.

He Himself is wise, and He Himself judges the Truth.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

Jin ka▫o naḋar karé parabʰ apnee gurmukʰ sabaḋ salaahaa hé. ||5||

Those whom God blesses with His Glance of Grace become Gurmukh, and praise the Word of the Shabad. ||5||

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖੈ ਕੇਤੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

Suṇ suṇ aakʰæ kéṫee baṇee.

Many listen and listen, and speak the Guru’s Bani.

ਸੁਣਿ ਕਹੀਐ ਕੋ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥

Suṇ kahee▫æ ko anṫ na jaaṇee.

Listening and speaking, no one knows His limits.

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਬੁਧਿ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

Jaa ka▫o alakʰ lakʰaa▫é aapé akaṫʰ kaṫʰaa buḋʰ ṫaahaa hé. ||6||

He alone is wise, unto whom the unseen Lord reveals Himself; he speaks the Unspoken Speech. ||6||

ਜਨਮੇ ਕਉ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਵਾਧਾਏ ॥

Janmé ka▫o vaajėh vaaḋʰaa▫é.

At birth, the congratulations pour in;

ਸੋਹਿਲੜੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਗਾਏ ॥

Sohilṛé agi▫aanee gaa▫é.

the ignorant sing songs of joy.

ਜੋ ਜਨਮੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

Jo janmæ ṫis sarpar marṇaa kiraṫ pa▫i▫aa sir saahaa hé. ||7||

Whoever is born, is sure to die, according to the destiny of past deeds inscribed upon his head by the Sovereign Lord King. ||7||

ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਏ ॥

Sanjog vijog méræ parabʰ kee▫é.

Union and separation were created by my God.

ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਦੁਖਾ ਸੁਖ ਦੀਏ ॥

Sarisat upaa▫é ḋukʰaa sukʰ ḋee▫é.

Creating the Universe, He gave it pain and pleasure.

ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਸਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

Ḋukʰ sukʰ hee ṫé bʰa▫é niraalé gurmukʰ seel sanaahaa hé. ||8||

The Gurmukhs remain unaffected by pain and pleasure; they wear the armor of humility. ||8||

ਨੀਕੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ॥

Neeké saaché ké vaapaaree.

The noble people are traders in Truth.

ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

Sach sa▫uḋaa læ gur veechaaree.

They purchase the true merchandise, contemplating the Guru.

ਸਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

Sachaa vakʰar jis ḋʰan palæ sabaḋ sachæ omaahaa hé. ||9||

One who has the wealth of the true commodity in his lap, is blessed with the rapture of the True Shabad. ||9||

ਕਾਚੀ ਸਉਦੀ ਤੋਟਾ ਆਵੈ ॥

Kaachee sa▫uḋee ṫotaa aavæ.

The false dealings lead only to loss.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

Gurmukʰ vaṇaj karé parabʰ bʰaavæ.

The trades of the Gurmukh are pleasing to God.

ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

Poonjee saabaṫ raas salaamaṫ chookaa jam kaa faahaa hé. ||10||

His stock is safe, and his capital is safe and sound. The noose of Death is cut away from around his neck. ||10||
