ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਜੀਇ ਆਈ ਕਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

Gur kee maṫ jee▫é aa▫ee kaar. ||1||

The Guru’s Teachings are useful to my soul. ||1||

ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥

In biḋʰ raam ramaṫ man maani▫aa.

Chanting the Lord’s Name in this way, my mind is satisfied.

ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gi▫aan anjan gur sabaḋ pachʰaani▫aa. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

I have obtained the ointment of spiritual wisdom, recognizing the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ||1||Pause||

ਇਕੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥

Ik sukʰ maani▫aa sahj milaa▫i▫aa.

Blended with the One Lord, I enjoy intuitive peace.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥

Nirmal baṇee bʰaram chukaa▫i▫aa.

Through the Immaculate Bani of the Word, my doubts have been dispelled.

ਲਾਲ ਭਏ ਸੂਹਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

Laal bʰa▫é soohaa rang maa▫i▫aa.

Instead of the pale color of Maya, I am imbued with the deep crimson color of the Lord’s Love.

ਨਦਰਿ ਭਈ ਬਿਖੁ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

Naḋar bʰa▫ee bikʰ tʰaak rahaa▫i▫aa. ||2||

By the Lord’s Glance of Grace, the poison has been eliminated. ||2||

ਉਲਟ ਭਈ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਗਿਆ ॥

Ulat bʰa▫ee jeevaṫ mar jaagi▫aa.

When I turned away, and became dead while still alive, I was awakened.

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਵੇ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗਿਆ ॥

Sabaḋ ravé man har si▫o laagi▫aa.

Chanting the Word of the Shabad, my mind is attached to the Lord.

ਰਸੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗਿਆ ॥

Ras sangrahi bikʰ par▫har ṫi▫aagi▫aa.

I have gathered in the Lord’s sublime essence, and cast out the poison.

ਭਾਇ ਬਸੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਿਆ ॥੩॥

Bʰaa▫é basé jam kaa bʰa▫o bʰaagi▫aa. ||3||

Abiding in His Love, the fear of death has run away. ||3||

ਸਾਦ ਰਹੇ ਬਾਦੰ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥

Saaḋ rahé baaḋaⁿ ahaⁿkaaraa.

My taste for pleasure ended, along with conflict and egotism.

ਚਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

Chiṫ har si▫o raaṫaa hukam apaaraa.

My consciousness is attuned to the Lord, by the Order of the Infinite.

ਜਾਤਿ ਰਹੇ ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਆਚਾਰਾ ॥

Jaaṫ rahé paṫ ké aachaaraa.

My pursuit for worldly pride and honor is over.

ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਭਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਤਮ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੪॥

Ḋarisat bʰa▫ee sukʰ aaṫam ḋʰaaraa. ||4||

When He blessed me with His Glance of Grace, peace was established in my soul. ||4||

ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਦੇਖਉ ਮੀਤੁ ॥

Ṫujʰ bin ko▫é na ḋékʰ▫a▫u meeṫ.

Without You, I see no friend at all.

ਕਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਉ ਕਿਸੁ ਦੇਵਉ ਚੀਤੁ ॥

Kis séva▫o kis ḋéva▫o cheeṫ.

Whom should I serve? Unto whom should I dedicate my consciousness?

ਕਿਸੁ ਪੂਛਉ ਕਿਸੁ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥

Kis poochʰa▫o kis laaga▫o paa▫é.

Whom should I ask? At whose feet should I fall?

ਕਿਸੁ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੫॥

Kis upḋés rahaa liv laa▫é. ||5||

By whose teachings will I remain absorbed in His Love? ||5||

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੀ ਗੁਰ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥

Gur sévee gur laaga▫o paa▫é.

I serve the Guru, and I fall at the Guru’s Feet.

ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਰਾਚਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

Bʰagaṫ karee raacha▫o har naa▫é.

I worship Him, and I am absorbed in the Lord’s Name.

ਸਿਖਿਆ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਭੋਜਨ ਭਾਉ ॥

Sikʰi▫aa ḋeekʰi▫aa bʰojan bʰaa▫o.

The Lord’s Love is my instruction, sermon and food.

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੬॥

Hukam sanjogee nij gʰar jaa▫o. ||6||

Enjoined to the Lord’s Command, I have entered the home of my inner self. ||6||

ਗਰਬ ਗਤੰ ਸੁਖ ਆਤਮ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥

Garab gaṫaⁿ sukʰ aaṫam ḋʰi▫aanaa.

With the extinction of pride, my soul has found peace and meditation.

ਜੋਤਿ ਭਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥

Joṫ bʰa▫ee joṫee maahi samaanaa.

The Divine Light has dawned, and I am absorbed in the Light.

ਲਿਖਤੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਨਹੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਨਾ ॥

Likʰaṫ mitæ nahee sabaḋ neesaanaa.

preordained destiny cannot be erased; the Shabad is my banner and insignia.

ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੭॥

Karṫaa karṇaa karṫaa jaanaa. ||7||

I know the Creator, the Creator of His Creation. ||7||

ਨਹ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਨਹ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਿਆਨਾ ॥

Nah pandiṫ nah chaṫur si▫aanaa.

I am not a learned Pandit, I am not clever or wise.

ਨਹ ਭੂਲੋ ਨਹ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥

Nah bʰoolo nah bʰaram bʰulaanaa.

I do not wander; I am not deluded by doubt.

ਕਥਉ ਨ ਕਥਨੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥

Kaṫʰa▫o na kaṫʰnee hukam pachʰaanaa.

I do not speak empty speech; I have recognized the Hukam of His Command.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੮॥੧॥

Naanak gurmaṫ sahj samaanaa. ||8||1||

Nanak is absorbed in intuitive peace through the Guru’s Teachings. ||8||1||

ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Ga▫oṛee gu▫aaréree mėhlaa 1.

Gauree Gwaarayree, First Mehl:

ਮਨੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਉਦਿਆਨੈ ॥

Man kunchar kaa▫i▫aa uḋi▫aanæ.

The mind is an elephant in the forest of the body.

ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਨੈ ॥

Gur ankas sach sabaḋ neesaanæ.

The Guru is the controlling stick; when the Insignia of the True Shabad is applied,

ਰਾਜ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਸੋਭ ਸੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੧॥

Raaj ḋu▫aaræ sobʰ so maanæ. ||1||

one obtains honor in the Court of God the King. ||1||

ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਨਹ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

Chaṫuraa▫ee nah cheeni▫aa jaa▫é.

He cannot be known through clever tricks.

ਬਿਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bin maaré ki▫o keemaṫ paa▫é. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

Without subduing the mind, how can His value be estimated? ||1||Pause||

ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਲੇਈ ॥

Gʰar mėh amriṫ ṫaskar lé▫ee.

In the house of the self is the Ambrosial Nectar, which is being stolen by the thieves.

ਨੰਨਾਕਾਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਕਰੇਈ ॥

Nannaakaar na ko▫é karé▫ee.

No one can say no to them.

ਰਾਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਈ ॥੨॥

Raakʰæ aap vadi▫aa▫ee ḋé▫ee. ||2||

He Himself protects us, and blesses us with greatness. ||2||

ਨੀਲ ਅਨੀਲ ਅਗਨਿ ਇਕ ਠਾਈ ॥

Neel aneel agan ik tʰaa▫ee.

There are billions, countless billions of fires of desire at the seat of the mind.

ਜਲਿ ਨਿਵਰੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥

Jal nivree gur boojʰ bujʰaa▫ee.

They are extinguished only with the water of understanding, imparted by the Guru.

ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਲੀਆ ਰਹਸਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ॥੩॥

Man ḋé lee▫aa rahas guṇ gaa▫ee. ||3||

Offering my mind, I have attained it, and I joyfully sing His Glorious Praises. ||3||

ਜੈਸਾ ਘਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਤੈਸਾ ॥

Jæsaa gʰar baahar so ṫæsaa.

Just as He is within the home of the self, so is He beyond.

ਬੈਸਿ ਗੁਫਾ ਮਹਿ ਆਖਉ ਕੈਸਾ ॥

Bæs gufaa mėh aakʰa▫o kæsaa.

But how can I describe Him, sitting in a cave?

ਸਾਗਰਿ ਡੂਗਰਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਐਸਾ ॥੪॥

Saagar doogar nirbʰa▫o æsaa. ||4||

The Fearless Lord is in the oceans, just as He is in the mountains. ||4||

ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਕਹੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਉਨੁ ॥

Moo▫é ka▫o kaho maaré ka▫un.

Tell me, who can kill someone who is already dead?

ਨਿਡਰੇ ਕਉ ਕੈਸਾ ਡਰੁ ਕਵਨੁ ॥

Nidré ka▫o kæsaa dar kavan.

What does he fear? Who can frighten the fearless one?

ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ਤੀਨੇ ਭਉਨ ॥੫॥

Sabaḋ pachʰaanæ ṫeené bʰa▫un. ||5||

He recognizes the Word of the Shabad, throughout the three worlds. ||5||

ਜਿਨਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਕਹਨੁ ਵਖਾਨਿਆ ॥

Jin kahi▫aa ṫin kahan vakʰaani▫aa.

One who speaks, merely describes speech.

ਜਿਨਿ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥

Jin boojʰi▫aa ṫin sahj pachʰaani▫aa.

But one who understands, intuitively realizes.

ਦੇਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੬॥

Ḋékʰ beechaar méraa man maani▫aa. ||6||

Seeing and reflecting upon it, my mind surrenders. ||6||

ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਇਕ ਨਾਈ ॥

Keeraṫ sooraṫ mukaṫ ik naa▫ee.

Praise, beauty and liberation are in the One Name.

ਤਹੀ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

Ṫahee niranjan rahi▫aa samaa▫ee.

In it, the Immaculate Lord is permeating and pervading.

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬਿਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਿਜ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥

Nij gʰar bi▫aap rahi▫aa nij tʰaa▫ee. ||7||

He dwells in the home of the self, and in His own sublime place. ||7||

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥

Usṫaṫ karahi kéṫé mun pareeṫ.

The many silent sages lovingly praise Him.
