ਸਰਮ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਸਸੁਰ ਭਏ ॥

Saram suraṫ ḋu▫é sasur bʰa▫é.

Modesty, humility and intuitive understanding are my mother-in-law and father-in-law;

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਲਏ ॥੨॥

Karṇee kaamaṇ kar man la▫é. ||2||

I have made good deeds as my spouse. ||2||

ਸਾਹਾ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵੀਆਹੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ॥

Saahaa sanjog vee▫aahu vijog.

Union with the Holy is my wedding date, and separation from the world is my marriage.

ਸਚੁ ਸੰਤਤਿ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋਗੁ ॥੩॥੩॥

Sach sanṫaṫ kaho Naanak jog. ||3||3||

Says Nanak, Truth is the child born of this Union. ||3||3||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1.

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਪਉਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਮੇਲੁ ॥

Pa▫uṇæ paaṇee agnee kaa mél.

The union of air, water and fire -

ਚੰਚਲ ਚਪਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਖੇਲੁ ॥

Chanchal chapal buḋʰ kaa kʰél.

the body is the play-thing of the fickle and unsteady intellect.

ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਸਵਾ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

Na▫o ḋarvaajé ḋasvaa ḋu▫aar.

It has nine doors, and then there is the Tenth Gate.

ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

Bujʰ ré gi▫aanee éhu beechaar. ||1||

Reflect upon this and understand it, O wise one. ||1||

ਕਥਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਸੁਨਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥

Kaṫʰṫaa bakṫaa sunṫaa so▫ee.

The Lord is the One who speaks, teaches and listens.

ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Aap beechaaré so gi▫aanee ho▫ee. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

One who contemplates his own self is truly wise. ||1||Pause||

ਦੇਹੀ ਮਾਟੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਪਉਣੁ ॥

Ḋéhee maatee bolæ pa▫uṇ.

The body is dust; the wind speaks through it.

ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮੂਆ ਹੈ ਕਉਣੁ ॥

Bujʰ ré gi▫aanee moo▫aa hæ ka▫uṇ.

Understand, O wise one, who has died.

ਮੂਈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

Moo▫ee suraṫ baaḋ ahaⁿkaar.

Awareness, conflict and ego have died,

ਓਹੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਜੋ ਦੇਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

Oh na moo▫aa jo ḋékʰaṇhaar. ||2||

but the One who sees does not die. ||2||

ਜੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

Jæ kaaraṇ ṫat ṫiraṫʰ jaahee.

For the sake of it, you journey to sacred shrines and holy rivers;

ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਾਹੀ ॥

Raṫan paḋaaraṫʰ gʰat hee maahee.

but this priceless jewel is within your own heart.

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥

Paṛ paṛ pandiṫ baaḋ vakʰaaṇæ.

The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read endlessly; they stir up arguments and controversies,

ਭੀਤਰਿ ਹੋਦੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੩॥

Bʰeeṫar hoḋee vasaṫ na jaaṇæ. ||3||

but they do not know the secret deep within. ||3||

ਹਉ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੁਈ ਬਲਾਇ ॥

Ha▫o na moo▫aa méree mu▫ee balaa▫é.

I have not died - that evil nature within me has died.

ਓਹੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਜੋ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

Oh na moo▫aa jo rahi▫aa samaa▫é.

The One who is pervading everywhere does not die.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

Kaho Naanak gur barahm ḋikʰaa▫i▫aa.

Says Nanak, the Guru has revealed God to me,

ਮਰਤਾ ਜਾਤਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੪॥

Marṫaa jaaṫaa naḋar na aa▫i▫aa. ||4||4||

and now I see that there is no such thing as birth or death. ||4||4||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਦਖਣੀ ॥

Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1 ḋakʰ▫ṇee.

Gauree, First Mehl, Dakhanee:

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਨਾਉ ॥

Suṇ suṇ boojʰæ maanæ naa▫o.

The one who listens and hears, who understands and believes in the Name,

ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥

Ṫaa kæ saḋ balihaaræ jaa▫o.

I am forever a sacrifice to him.

ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥

Aap bʰulaa▫é tʰa▫ur na tʰaa▫o.

When the Lord Himself leads us astray, there is no other place of rest for us to find.

ਤੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੧॥

Ṫooⁿ samjʰaavahi mél milaa▫o. ||1||

You impart understanding, and You unite us in Your Union. ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਚਲੈ ਮੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

Naam milæ chalæ mæ naal.

I obtain the Naam, which shall go along with me in the end.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਧੀ ਸਭ ਕਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Bin naavæ baaḋʰee sabʰ kaal. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

Without the Name, all are held in the grip of Death. ||1||Pause||

ਖੇਤੀ ਵਣਜੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥

Kʰéṫee vaṇaj naavæ kee ot.

My farming and my trading are by the Support of the Name.

ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਜ ਕੀ ਪੋਟ ॥

Paap punn beej kee pot.

The seeds of sin and virtue are bound together.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਜੀਅ ਮਹਿ ਚੋਟ ॥

Kaam kroḋʰ jee▫a mėh chot.

Sexual desire and anger are the wounds of the soul.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੇ ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟ ॥੨॥

Naam visaar chalé man kʰot. ||2||

The evil-minded ones forget the Naam, and then depart. ||2||

ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੀਖ ॥

Saaché gur kee saachee seekʰ.

True are the Teachings of the True Guru.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਖ ॥

Ṫan man seeṫal saach pareekʰ.

The body and mind are cooled and soothed, by the touchstone of Truth.

ਜਲ ਪੁਰਾਇਨਿ ਰਸ ਕਮਲ ਪਰੀਖ ॥

Jal puraa▫in ras kamal pareekʰ.

This is the true mark of wisdom: that one remains detached, like the water-lily, or the lotus upon the water.

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਮੀਠੇ ਰਸ ਈਖ ॥੩॥

Sabaḋ raṫé meetʰé ras eekʰ. ||3||

Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, one becomes sweet, like the juice of the sugar cane. ||3||

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਗੜਿ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

Hukam sanjogee gaṛ ḋas ḋu▫aar.

By the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, the castle of the body has ten gates.

ਪੰਚ ਵਸਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

Panch vasėh mil joṫ apaar.

The five passions dwell there, together with the Divine Light of the Infinite.

ਆਪਿ ਤੁਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰ ॥

Aap ṫulæ aapé vaṇjaar.

The Lord Himself is the merchandise, and He Himself is the trader.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥੫॥

Naanak naam savaaraṇhaar. ||4||5||

O Nanak! Through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, we are adorned and rejuvenated. ||4||5||

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Ga▫oṛee mėhlaa 1.

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਜਾਤੋ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਵੈ ॥

Jaaṫo jaa▫é kahaa ṫé aavæ.

How can we know where we came from?

ਕਹ ਉਪਜੈ ਕਹ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

Kah upjæ kah jaa▫é samaavæ.

Where did we originate, and where will we go and merge?

ਕਿਉ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਕਿਉ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

Ki▫o baaḋʰi▫o ki▫o mukṫee paavæ.

How are we bound, and how do we obtain liberation?

ਕਿਉ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

Ki▫o abʰinaasee sahj samaavæ. ||1||

How do we merge with intuitive ease into the Eternal, Imperishable Lord? ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

Naam riḋæ amriṫ mukʰ naam.

With the Naam in the heart and the Ambrosial Naam on our lips,

ਨਰਹਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਰਹਰ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Nar▫har naam nar▫har nihkaam. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

through the Name of the Lord, we rise above desire, like the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਸਹਜੇ ਆਵੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਇ ॥

Sėhjé aavæ sėhjé jaa▫é.

With intuitive ease we come, and with intuitive ease we depart.

ਮਨ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

Man ṫé upjæ man maahi samaa▫é.

From the mind we originate, and into the mind we are absorbed.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤੋ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

Gurmukʰ mukṫo banḋʰ na paa▫é.

As Gurmukh, we are liberated, and are not bound.

ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਛੁਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥

Sabaḋ beechaar chʰutæ har naa▫é. ||2||

Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, we are emancipated through the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਤਰਵਰ ਪੰਖੀ ਬਹੁ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁ ॥

Ṫarvar pankʰee baho nis baas.

At night, lots of birds settle on the tree.

ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥

Sukʰ ḋukʰee▫aa man moh viṇaas.

Some are happy, and some are sad. Caught in the desires of the mind, they perish.

ਸਾਝ ਬਿਹਾਗ ਤਕਹਿ ਆਗਾਸੁ ॥

Saajʰ bihaag ṫakėh aagaas.

And when the life-night comes to its end, then they look to the sky.

ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥੩॥

Ḋah ḋis ḋʰaavėh karam likʰi▫aas. ||3||

They fly away in all ten directions, according to their preordained destiny. ||3||
