ਦਯਿ ਵਿਗੋਏ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਫਿਟਾ ਵਤੈ ਗਲਾ ॥

Ḋa▫yi vigo▫é firėh viguṫé fitaa vaṫæ galaa.

Ruined by the Merciful Lord, they wander around in disgrace, and their entire troop is contaminated.

ਜੀਆ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਸੋਈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਰਖੈ ॥

Jee▫aa maar jeevaalé so▫ee avar na ko▫ee rakʰæ.

The Lord alone kills and restores to life; no one else can protect anyone from Him.

ਦਾਨਹੁ ਤੈ ਇਸਨਾਨਹੁ ਵੰਜੇ ਭਸੁ ਪਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਖੁਥੈ ॥

Ḋaanhu ṫæ isnaanhu vanjé bʰas pa▫ee sir kʰuṫʰæ.

They go without giving alms or any cleansing baths; their shaven heads become covered with dust.

ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਰਤਨ ਉਪੰਨੇ ਮੇਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਮਾਧਾਣੀ ॥

Paaṇee vichahu raṫan upanné mér kee▫aa maaḋʰaaṇee.

The jewel emerged from the water, when the mountain of gold was used to churn it.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਵੀ ਥਾਪੇ ਪੁਰਬੀ ਲਗੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

Atʰsatʰ ṫiraṫʰ ḋévee ṫʰaapé purbee lagæ baṇee.

The gods established the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, where the festivals are celebrated and hymns are chanted.

ਨਾਇ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਨਾਤੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਜਾਣੀ ॥

Naa▫é nivaajaa naaṫæ poojaa naavan saḋaa sujaaṇee.

After bathing, the Muslims recite their prayers, and after bathing, the Hindus perform their worship services. The wise always take cleansing baths.

ਮੁਇਆ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਾਂ ਸਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਾਣੀ ॥

Mu▫i▫aa jeevḋi▫aa gaṫ hovæ jaaⁿ sir paa▫ee▫æ paaṇee.

At the time of death, and at the time of birth, they are purified, when water is poured on their heads.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਸੈਤਾਨੀ ਏਨਾ ਗਲ ਨ ਭਾਣੀ ॥

Naanak sirkʰuṫé sæṫaanee énaa gal na bʰaaṇee.

O Nanak! The shaven-headed ones are devils. They are not pleased to hear these words.

ਵੁਠੈ ਹੋਇਐ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਜੀਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

vutʰæ ho▫i▫æ ho▫é bilaaval jee▫aa jugaṫ samaaṇee.

When it rains, there is happiness. Water is the key to all life.

ਵੁਠੈ ਅੰਨੁ ਕਮਾਦੁ ਕਪਾਹਾ ਸਭਸੈ ਪੜਦਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

vutʰæ ann kamaaḋ kapaahaa sabʰsæ paṛ▫ḋaa hovæ.

When it rains, the corn grows, and the sugar cane, and the cotton, which provides clothing for all.

ਵੁਠੈ ਘਾਹੁ ਚਰਹਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਸੁਰਹੀ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਦਹੀ ਵਿਲੋਵੈ ॥

vutʰæ gʰaahu charėh niṫ sur▫hee saa ḋʰan ḋahee vilovæ.

When it rains, the cows always have grass to graze upon, and housewives can churn the milk into butter.

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਿਇ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਸਦ ਪੂਜਾ ਪਇਐ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥

Ṫiṫ gʰi▫é hom jag saḋ poojaa pa▫i▫æ kaaraj sohæ.

With that ghee, sacred feasts and worship services are performed; all these efforts are blessed.

ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਨਦੀ ਸਭਿ ਸਿਖੀ ਨਾਤੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

Guroo samunḋ naḋee sabʰ sikʰee naaṫæ jiṫ vadi▫aa▫ee.

The Guru is the ocean, and all His Teachings are the river. Bathing within it, glorious greatness is obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾ ਸਤ ਚਟੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥

Naanak jé sirkʰuṫé naavan naahee ṫaa saṫ chaté sir chʰaa▫ee. ||1||

O Nanak! If the shaven-headed ones do not bathe, then seven handfuls of ashes are upon their heads. ||1||

Second Mehl:

ਅਗੀ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੇਹੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

Agee paalaa kė karé sooraj kéhee raaṫ.

What can the cold do to the fire? How can the night affect the sun?

ਚੰਦ ਅਨੇਰਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਤਿ ॥

Chanḋ anéraa kė karé pa▫uṇ paaṇee ki▫aa jaaṫ.

What can the darkness do to the moon? What can social status do to air and water?

ਧਰਤੀ ਚੀਜੀ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

Ḋʰarṫee cheejee kė karé jis vich sabʰ kichʰ ho▫é.

What are personal possessions to the earth, from which all things are produced?

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਪਤਿ ਰਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

Naanak ṫaa paṫ jaaṇee▫æ jaa paṫ rakʰæ so▫é. ||2||

O Nanak! He alone is known as honorable, whose honor the Lord preserves. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pa▫oṛee.

Pauree:

ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਬਹਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਲਾਣਿਆ ॥

Ṫuḋʰ saché sub▫haan saḋaa kalaaṇi▫aa.

It is of You, O my True and Wondrous Lord, that I sing forever.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹੋਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

Ṫooⁿ sachaa ḋeebaaṇ hor aavaṇ jaaṇi▫aa.

Yours is the True Court. All others are subject to coming and going.

ਸਚੁ ਜਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਜੇਹਿਆ ॥

Sach jė mangėh ḋaan sė ṫuḋʰæ jéhi▫aa.

Those who ask for the gift of the True Name are like You.

ਸਚੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਸੋਹਿਆ ॥

Sach ṫéraa furmaan sabḋé sohi▫aa.

Your Command is True; we are adorned with the Word of Your Shabad.

ਮੰਨਿਐ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਤੁਧੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Mani▫æ gi▫aan ḋʰi▫aan ṫuḋʰæ ṫé paa▫i▫aa.

Through faith and trust, we receive spiritual wisdom and meditation from You.

ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥

Karam pavæ neesaan na chalæ chalaa▫i▫aa.

By Your Grace, the banner of honor is obtained. It cannot be taken away or lost.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥

Ṫooⁿ sachaa ḋaaṫaar niṫ ḋévėh chaṛėh savaa▫i▫aa.

You are the True Giver; You give continually. Your Gifts continue to increase.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨੬॥

Naanak mangæ ḋaan jo ṫuḋʰ bʰaa▫i▫aa. ||26||

Nanak begs for that gift which is pleasing to You. ||26||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Salok mėhlaa 2.

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਦੀਖਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮੇਉ ॥

Ḋeekʰi▫aa aakʰ bujʰaa▫i▫aa sifṫee sach samé▫o.

Those who have accepted the Guru’s Teachings, and who have found the path, remain absorbed in the Praises of the True Lord.

ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਉਪਦੇਸੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ॥੧॥

Ṫin ka▫o ki▫aa upḋésee▫æ jin gur Naanak ḋé▫o. ||1||

What teachings can be imparted to those who have the Divine Guru Nanak as their Guru? ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Mėhlaa 1.

First Mehl:

ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

Aap bujʰaa▫é so▫ee boojʰæ.

We understand the Lord only when He Himself inspires us to understand Him.

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਝਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

Jis aap sujʰaa▫é ṫis sabʰ kichʰ soojʰæ.

He alone knows everything, unto whom the Lord Himself gives knowledge.

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਥਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਲੂਝੈ ॥

Kahi kahi kaṫʰnaa maa▫i▫aa loojʰæ.

One may talk and preach and give sermons but still yearn after Maya.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਗਲ ਕਰੇ ਆਕਾਰ ॥

Hukmee sagal karé aakaar.

The Lord, by the Hukam of His Command, has created the entire creation.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਰਬ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥

Aapé jaaṇæ sarab veechaar.

He Himself knows the inner nature of all.

ਅਖਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਖਿਓ ਆਪਿ ॥

Akʰar Naanak akʰi▫o aap.

O Nanak! He Himself uttered the Word.

ਲਹੈ ਭਰਾਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੨॥

Lahæ bʰaraaṫ hovæ jis ḋaaṫ. ||2||

Doubt departs from one who receives this gift. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pa▫oṛee.

Pauree:

ਹਉ ਢਾਢੀ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

Ha▫o dʰaadʰee vékaar kaaræ laa▫i▫aa.

I was a minstrel, out of work, when the Lord took me into His service.

ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਹੈ ਕੈ ਵਾਰ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥

Raaṫ ḋihæ kæ vaar ḋʰarahu furmaa▫i▫aa.

To sing His Praises day and night, He gave me His Order, right from the start.

ਢਾਢੀ ਸਚੈ ਮਹਲਿ ਖਸਮਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥

Dʰaadʰee sachæ mahal kʰasam bulaa▫i▫aa.

My Lord and Master has summoned me, His minstrel, to the True Mansion of His Presence.

ਸਚੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਪੜਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Sachee sifaṫ saalaah kapṛaa paa▫i▫aa.

He has dressed me in the robes of His True Praise and Glory.

ਸਚਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥

Sachaa amriṫ naam bʰojan aa▫i▫aa.

The Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name has become my food.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਖਾਧਾ ਰਜਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Gurmaṫee kʰaaḋʰaa raj ṫin sukʰ paa▫i▫aa.

Those who follow the Guru’s Teachings, who eat this food and are satisfied, find peace.

ਢਾਢੀ ਕਰੇ ਪਸਾਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥

Dʰaadʰee karé pasaa▫o sabaḋ vajaa▫i▫aa.

His minstrel spreads His Glory, singing and vibrating the Word of His Shabad.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨੭॥ ਸੁਧੁ

Naanak sach saalaahi pooraa paa▫i▫aa. ||27|| suḋʰu

O Nanak! Praising the True Lord, I have obtained His Perfection. ||27||Sudh||
