ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਗਦ ਲਖ ਮਣਾ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਭਾਉ ॥

Naanak kaagaḋ lakʰ maṇaa paṛ paṛ keechæ bʰaa▫o.

O Nanak! If I had hundreds of thousands of stacks of paper, and if I were to read and recite and embrace love for the Lord,

ਮਸੂ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲੇਖਣਿ ਪਉਣੁ ਚਲਾਉ ॥

Masoo ṫot na aavee lékʰaṇ pa▫uṇ chalaa▫o.

and if ink were never to fail me, and if my pen were able to move like the wind -

ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਹਉ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥੨॥

Bʰee ṫéree keemaṫ naa pavæ ha▫o kévad aakʰaa naa▫o. ||4||2||

even so, I could not estimate Your Value. How can I describe the Greatness of Your Name? ||4||2||

ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਲੇਖੈ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਲੇਖੈ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਉ ॥

Lékʰæ bolaṇ bolṇaa lékʰæ kʰaaṇaa kʰaa▫o.

As it is preordained, people speak their words. As it is preordained, they consume their food.

ਲੇਖੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਾਈਆ ਲੇਖੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਾਉ ॥

Lékʰæ vaat chalaa▫ee▫aa lékʰæ suṇ vékʰaa▫o.

As it is preordained, they walk along the way. As it is preordained, they see and hear.

ਲੇਖੈ ਸਾਹ ਲਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਪੜੇ ਕਿ ਪੁਛਣ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥

Lékʰæ saah lavaa▫ee▫ahi paṛé kė puchʰaṇ jaa▫o. ||1||

As it is preordained, they draw their breath. Why should I go and ask the scholars about this? ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਚਨਾ ਧੋਹੁ ॥

Baabaa maa▫i▫aa rachnaa ḋʰohu.

O Baba, the splendor of Maya is deceptive.

ਅੰਧੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਏਹ ਨ ਓਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Anḋʰæ naam visaari▫aa naa ṫis éh na oh. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

The blind man has forgotten the Name; he is in limbo, neither here nor there. ||1||Pause||

ਜੀਵਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਏਥੈ ਖਾਜੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥

Jeevaṇ marṇaa jaa▫é kæ éṫʰæ kʰaajæ kaal.

Life and death come to all who are born. Everything here gets devoured by Death.

ਜਿਥੈ ਬਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਚਲਿਓ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

Jiṫʰæ bahi samjaa▫ee▫æ ṫiṫʰæ ko▫é na chali▫o naal.

He sits and examines the accounts, there where no one goes along with anyone.

ਰੋਵਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੇਤੜੇ ਸਭਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

Rovaṇ vaalé jéṫ▫ṛé sabʰ banėh pand paraal. ||2||

Those who weep and wail might just as well all tie bundles of straw. ||2||

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਨ ਆਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

Sabʰ ko aakʰæ bahuṫ bahuṫ gʰat na aakʰæ ko▫é.

Everyone says that God is the Greatest of the Great. No one calls Him any less.

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਵਡਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

Keemaṫ kinæ na paa▫ee▫aa kahaṇ na vadaa ho▫é.

No one can estimate His Worth. By speaking of Him, His Greatness is not increased.

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਹੋਰਿ ਜੀਆ ਕੇਤੇ ਲੋਅ ॥੩॥

Saachaa saahab ék ṫoo hor jee▫aa kéṫé lo▫a. ||3||

You are the One True Lord and Master of all the other beings, of so many worlds. ||3||

ਨੀਚਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਨੀਚੀ ਹੂ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਚੁ ॥

Neechaa anḋar neech jaaṫ neechee hoo aṫ neech.

Those who are lowest of the low class, the very lowest of the low;

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਥਿ ਵਡਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੀਸ ॥

Naanak ṫin kæ sang saaṫʰ vadi▫aa si▫o ki▫aa rees.

Nanak seeks the company of those. Why should he try to compete with the great?

ਜਿਥੈ ਨੀਚ ਸਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਥੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖਸੀਸ ॥੪॥੩॥

Jiṫʰæ neech samaalee▫an ṫiṫʰæ naḋar ṫéree bakʰsees. ||4||3||

In that place where the lowly are cared for-there, the Blessings of Your Glance of Grace rain down. ||4||3||

ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਲਬੁ ਕੁਤਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਚੂਹੜਾ ਠਗਿ ਖਾਧਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ॥

Lab kuṫaa kooṛ choohṛaa tʰag kʰaaḋʰaa murḋaar.

Greed is a dog; falsehood is a filthy street-sweeper. Cheating is eating a rotting carcass.

ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਰ ਮਲੁ ਮੁਖ ਸੁਧੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲੁ ॥

Par ninḋaa par mal mukʰ suḋʰee agan kroḋʰ chandaal.

Slandering others is putting the filth of others into your own mouth. The fire of anger is the outcast who burns dead bodies at the crematorium.

ਰਸ ਕਸ ਆਪੁ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ ਏ ਕਰਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੧॥

Ras kas aap salaahṇaa é karam méré karṫaar. ||1||

I am caught in these tastes and flavors, and in self-conceited praise. These are my actions, O my Creator! ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

Baabaa bolee▫æ paṫ ho▫é.

O Baba, speak only that which will bring you honor.

ਊਤਮ ਸੇ ਦਰਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਨੀਚ ਕਰਮ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ooṫam sé ḋar ooṫam kahee▫ahi neech karam bahi ro▫é. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

They alone are good, who are judged good at the Lord’s Door. Those with bad karma can only sit and weep. ||1||Pause||

ਰਸੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰਸੁ ਰੁਪਾ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਰਮਲ ਕੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

Ras su▫inaa ras rupaa kaamaṇ ras parmal kee vaas.

The pleasures of gold and silver, the pleasures of women, the pleasure of the fragrance of sandalwood,

ਰਸੁ ਘੋੜੇ ਰਸੁ ਸੇਜਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਰਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ॥

Ras gʰoṛé ras séjaa manḋar ras meetʰaa ras maas.

the pleasure of horses, the pleasure of a soft bed in a palace, the pleasure of sweet treats and the pleasure of hearty meals -

ਏਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ ਕੈ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੨॥

Éṫé ras sareer ké kæ gʰat naam nivaas. ||2||

these pleasures of the human body are so numerous; how can the Naam, the Name of the Lord, find its dwelling in the heart? ||2||

ਜਿਤੁ ਬੋਲਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੋ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

Jiṫ boli▫æ paṫ paa▫ee▫æ so boli▫aa parvaaṇ.

Those words are acceptable, which, when spoken, bring honor.

ਫਿਕਾ ਬੋਲਿ ਵਿਗੁਚਣਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਅਜਾਣ ॥

Fikaa bol viguchṇaa suṇ moorakʰ man ajaaṇ.

Harsh words bring only grief. Listen, O foolish and ignorant mind!

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਿ ਕਹਣ ਵਖਾਣ ॥੩॥

Jo ṫis bʰaavėh sé bʰalé hor kė kahaṇ vakʰaaṇ. ||3||

Those who are pleasing to Him are good. What else is there to be said? ||3||

ਤਿਨ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਪਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਜਿਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

Ṫin maṫ ṫin paṫ ṫin ḋʰan palæ jin hirḋæ rahi▫aa samaa▫é.

Wisdom, honor and wealth are in the laps of those whose hearts remain permeated with the Lord.

ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਅਵਰ ਸੁਆਲਿਉ ਕਾਇ ॥

Ṫin kaa ki▫aa salaahṇaa avar su▫aali▫o kaa▫é.

What praise can be offered to them? What other adornments can be bestowed upon them?

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਦਾਨਿ ਨ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੪॥

Naanak naḋree baahré raachėh ḋaan na naa▫é. ||4||4||

O Nanak! Those who lack the Lord’s Glance of Grace cherish neither charity nor the Lord’s Name. ||4||4||

ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਅਮਲੁ ਗਲੋਲਾ ਕੂੜ ਕਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਿ ॥

Amal galolaa kooṛ kaa ḋiṫaa ḋévaṇhaar.

The Great Giver has given the intoxicating drug of falsehood.

ਮਤੀ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਖੁਸੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

Maṫee maraṇ visaari▫aa kʰusee keeṫee ḋin chaar.

The people are intoxicated; they have forgotten death, and they have fun for a few days.

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਸੋਫੀਆ ਰਾਖਣ ਕਉ ਦਰਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

Sach mili▫aa ṫin sofee▫aa raakʰaṇ ka▫o ḋarvaar. ||1||

Those who do not use intoxicants are true; they dwell in the Court of the Lord. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

Naanak saaché ka▫o sach jaaṇ.

O Nanak! Know the True Lord as True.

ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਚਲੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Jiṫ sévi▫æ sukʰ paa▫ee▫æ ṫéree ḋargėh chalæ maaṇ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

Serving Him, peace is obtained; you shall go to His Court with honor. ||1||Pause||

ਸਚੁ ਸਰਾ ਗੁੜ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

Sach saraa guṛ baahraa jis vich sachaa naa▫o.

The Wine of Truth is not fermented from molasses. The True Name is contained within it.
