AvrI no smJwvix jwie ] (140-1)
avree no samjhaavan jaa-ay.
And yet, they go out to teach others.

muTw Awip muhwey swQY ] (140-1)
muthaa aap muhaa-ay saathai.
They are deceived, and they deceive their companions.

nwnk AYsw AwgU jwpY ]1] (140-1)
naanak aisaa aagoo jaapai. ||1||
O Nanak, such are the leaders of men. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:

ijs dY AMdir scu hY so scw nwmu muiK scu Alwey ] (140-2)
jis dai andar sach hai so sachaa naam mukh sach alaa-ay.
Those, within whom the Truth dwells, obtain the True Name; they speak only the Truth.

Ehu hir mwrig Awip cldw hornw no hir mwrig pwey ] (140-2)
oh har maarag aap chaldaa hornaa no har maarag paa-ay.
They walk on the Lord's Path, and inspire others to walk on the Lord's Path as well.

jy AgY qIrQu hoie qw mlu lhY CpiV nwqY sgvI mlu lwey ] (140-3)
jay agai tirath ho-ay taa mal lahai chhaparh naatai sagvee mal laa-ay.
Bathing in a pool of holy water, they are washed clean of filth. But, by bathing in a stagnant pond, they are contaminated with even more filth.

qIrQu pUrw siqgurU jo Anidnu hir hir nwmu iDAwey ] (140-3)
tirath pooraa satguroo jo an-din har har naam Dhi-aa-ay.
The True Guru is the Perfect Pool of Holy Water. Night and day, He meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

Ehu Awip Cutw kutMb isau dy hir hir nwmu sB isRsit Cfwey ] (140-4)
oh aap chhutaa kutamb si-o day har har naam sabh sarisat chhadaa-ay.
He is saved, along with his family; bestowing the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, He saves the whole world.

jn nwnk iqsu bilhwrxY jo Awip jpY Avrw nwmu jpwey ]2] (140-5)
jan naanak tis balihaarnai jo aap japai avraa naam japaa-ay. ||2||
Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to one who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it as well. ||2||

Pauree:

ieik kMd mUlu cuix Kwih vx KMif vwsw ] (140-5)
ik kand mool chun khaahi van khand vaasaa.
Some pick and eat fruits and roots, and live in the wilderness.

ieik Bgvw vysu kir iPrih jogI sMinAwsw ] (140-6)
ik bhagvaa vays kar fireh jogee saniaasaa.
Some wander around wearing saffron robes, as Yogis and Sanyaasees.

AMdir iqRsnw bhuqu Cwdn Bojn kI Awsw ] (140-6)
andar tarisnaa bahut chhaadan bhojan kee aasaa.
But there is still so much desire within them-they still yearn for clothes and food.

ibrQw jnmu gvwie n igrhI n audwsw ] (140-7)
birthaa janam gavaa-ay na girhee na udaasaa.
They waste their lives uselessly; they are neither householders nor renunciates.

jmkwlu isrhu n auqrY iqRibiD mnsw ] (140-7)
jamkaal sirahu na utrai taribaDh mansaa.
The Messenger of Death hangs over their heads, and they cannot escape the three-phased desire.

gurmqI kwlu n AwvY nyVY jw hovY dwsin dwsw ] (140-8)
gurmatee kaal na aavai nayrhai jaa hovai daasan daasaa.
Death does not even approach those who follow the Guru's Teachings, and become the slaves of the Lord's slaves.

sachaa sabad sach man ghar hee maahi udaasaa.
The True Word of the Shabad abides in their true minds; within the home of their own inner beings, they remain detached.

naanak satgur sayvan aapnaa say aasaa tay niraasaa. ||5||
O Nanak, those who serve their True Guru, rise from desire to desirelessness. ||5||

jy rqu lgY kpVY jwmw hoie plIqu ] (140-9)
jay rat lagai kaprhai jaamaa ho-ay paleet.
If one's clothes are stained with blood, the garment becomes polluted.

jo rqu pIvih mwxsw iqn ikau inrmlu cIqu ] (140-10)
jo rat peeveh maansaa tin ki-o nirmal cheet.
Those who suck the blood of human beings-how can their consciousness be pure?

nwnk nwau Kudwie kw idil hCY muiK lyhu ] (140-10)
naanak naa-o khudaa-ay kaa dil hachhai mukh layho.
O Nanak, chant the Name of God, with heart-felt devotion.

Avir idvwjy dunI ky JUTy Aml kryhu ]1] (140-11)
avar divaajay dunee kay jhoothay amal karayhu. ||1||
Everything else is just a pompous worldly show, and the practice of false deeds. ||1||

First Mehl:

jw hau nwhI qw ikAw AwKw ikhu nwhI ikAw hovw ] (140-11)
jaa ha-o naahee taa ki-aa aakhaa kihu naahee ki-aa hovaa.
Since I am no one, what can I say? Since I am nothing, what can I be?

kIqw krxw kihAw kQnw BirAw Bir Bir DovW ] (140-12)
keetaa karnaa kahi-aa kathnaa bhari-aa bhar bhar DhovaaN.
As He created me, so I act. As He causes me to speak, so I speak. I am full and overflowing with sins-if only I could wash them away!

Awip n buJw lok buJweI AYsw AwgU hovW ] (140-12)
aap na bujhaa lok bujhaa-ee aisaa aagoo hovaaN.
I do not understand myself, and yet I try to teach others. Such is the guide I am!

nwnk AMDw hoie kY dsy rwhY sBsu muhwey swQY ] (140-13)
naanak anDhaa ho-ay kai dasay raahai sabhas muhaa-ay saathai.
O Nanak, the one who is blind shows others the way, and misleads all his companions.

AgY gieAw muhy muih pwih su AYsw AwgU jwpY ]2] (140-13)
agai ga-i-aa muhay muhi paahi so aisaa aagoo jaapai. ||2||
But, going to the world hereafter, he shall be beaten and kicked in the face; then, it will be obvious, what sort of guide he was! ||2||

mwhw ruqI sB qUM GVI mUrq vIcwrw ] (140-14)
maahaa rutee sabh tooN gharhee moorat veechaaraa.
Through all the months and the seasons, the minutes and the hours, I dwell upon You, O Lord.

tooN gantai kinai na paa-i-o sachay alakh apaaraa.
No one has attained You by clever calculations, O True, Unseen and Infinite Lord.

piVAw mUrKu AwKIAY ijsu lbu loBu AhMkwrw ] (140-15)
parhi-aa moorakh aakhee-ai jis lab lobh ahaNkaaraa.
That scholar who is full of greed, arrogant pride and egotism, is known to be a fool.

nwau pVIAY nwau buJIAY gurmqI vIcwrw ] (140-15)
naa-o parhee-ai naa-o bujhee-ai gurmatee veechaaraa.
So read the Name, and realize the Name, and contemplate the Guru's Teachings.

gurmqI nwmu Dnu KitAw BgqI Bry BMfwrw ] (140-16)
gurmatee naam Dhan khati-aa bhagtee bharay bhandaaraa.
Through the Guru's Teachings, I have earned the wealth of the Naam; I possess the storehouses, overflowing with devotion to the Lord.

inrmlu nwmu mMinAw dir scY sicAwrw ] (140-16)
nirmal naam mani-aa dar sachai sachi-aaraa.
Believing in the Immaculate Naam, one is hailed as true, in the True Court of the Lord.

ijs dw jIau prwxu hY AMqir joiq Apwrw ] (140-17)
jis daa jee-o paraan hai antar jot apaaraa.
The Divine Light of the Infinite Lord, who owns the soul and the breath of life, is deep within the inner being.

scw swhu ieku qUM horu jgqu vxjwrw ]6] (140-17)
sachaa saahu ik tooN hor jagat vanjaaraa. ||6||
You alone are the True Banker, O Lord; the rest of the world is just Your petty trader. ||6||

Shalok, First Mehl:

imhr msIiq isdku muslw hku hlwlu kurwxu ] (140-18)
mihar maseet sidak muslaa hak halaal kuraan.
Let mercy be your mosque, faith your prayer-mat, and honest living your Koran.

srm suMniq sIlu rojw hohu muslmwxu ] (140-18)
saram sunat seel rojaa hohu musalmaan.
Make modesty your circumcision, and good conduct your fast. In this way, you shall be a true Muslim.

krxI kwbw scu pIru klmw krm invwj ] (140-19)
karnee kaabaa sach peer kalmaa karam nivaaj.
Let good conduct be your Kaabaa, Truth your spiritual guide, and the karma of good deeds your prayer and chant.

qsbI sw iqsu BwvsI nwnk rKY lwj ]1] (140-19)
tasbee saa tis bhaavsee naanak rakhai laaj. ||1||
Let your rosary be that which is pleasing to His Will. O Nanak, God shall preserve your honor. ||1||
